Doesn't it seem to be a marriage between more or less typical Indo-European style religion and local traditions? Obviously many of the main gods are IE in origin, but Hinduism seems a good deal more complex than any other basic IE religion, with a good number of unique features.

The claim is a political one - Hindu nationalism's view of history is one in which their Hindu India has been under constant attack from foreign invaders (Muslims and British) who have enslaved Hindus and imposed their "foreign" traditions on them. The theory, then, that Hinduism came, or was even influenced, by foreign invaders (Aryans), is obviously something they feel the need to fight, regardless of the evidence.
