  • Hell, that's what you should have done from the start! Makes no sense to blame Lebanon for what Hezbollah has done, especially since the new pro-US anti-Syria government has been in office for less than a year and hasn't exactly built up the Lebanese military to take out Hezbollah (if they went after them now it'd be a bloody civil war taking years and years again).

I think most Lebanese do realize that Hezbollah is a pro-Syrian force in a country which threw out the Syrian troops a year back.

Yeah, but do you think that the antagonism towards Hizbullah would be surfacing as strongly?

I was calling for a ground invasion from day one - but you can bet your ass that the Lebanese opinion and the world opinion would be much more severely against that ( oh them j00s in teh landgrab again, see? )

    • Uh... you can still be on Lebanon's side and think Isreali use of SOME force is ok. It requires you to be able to realize that Hezbollah and Lebanon are not the same thing.

And yes, it really does end up being that simple: Lebanon is arguing, it isn't us. US is saying, it isn't Lebanon. That seems quite clearly to be taking Lebanon's side.

Well the actions they are taking at the UN seem to say quite clearly that they are on Israel's side. Hmmm... Maybe it is a bit more complex afterall. Then again, what in the ME is simple?

Did the UN resolution say "It's not Lebanon, it's Hezbollah"? I don't think so. The administration has said that Isreal should take caution and says the culprits are Hezbollah, Syria, and Iran (not Lebanon). They are obviously concerned about the Lebanese government falling and agree that Lebanon is not responsible for the kidnappings.

The US does back Isreal's use of force (as it is currently), but NOT Isreal's argument that Lebanon is to blame.

Did you lose it, and have you lost anything else?

            • I wonder if actually people realise what kind of Olmert has been setting? Effectively he's sending the message that whenever an Israeli soldier is kidnapped or an incident of similar magnitude happens, Israel will launch a full-blown military campaign. That's setting a pretty low bar. Which may be all fine for the gung-hoists amongst us, but those militants group aren't going to be dissuaded from future provocations so you'd have to ask yourself the question for how long Israel can keep reacting in this way to incidents without being in a constant state of war.

              • The way I see it, Israel started the heavy actions, however this is not declaration of war. They reacted to action by whoever came and took those soldiers.

This is the right thing to do. Israel all the way. Get'em all.

                    • proportional response
I wonder what a proportional response would be. A kidnapping of two members of Hezbollah and indiscriminately firing 700 rockets at population centers in Lebanon?
