I like my job OK. It's definitely challenging. I have 30+ subordinates, few engineers and specialists, and an assistant. I also have a demanding manager. We have to provide results every single day. Failing to meet the requirements will lead into problems that needs to be solved - fast.

The responsibility is great, but so is the reward, that is the experience. I have fired one person (didn't want to), I have been drilled. But I have survived. Tomorrow is a new day of challenges and I will also hold a meeting for my people. I have to stay sharp every single hour, know what's going on at multiple directions while at the same time handling every day worries and business of all of my people. I try to make it look effortless, but it really isn't. It's tough, demanding and there's a price to pay if you screw up, but there's some satisfaction when you do succeed.

If it paid well, I'd give it a 10. But it doesn't, so I'll give it an 8.

My job is great and I think I'm lucky to have it. Though I'm two weeks into a month long business trip so life on the road is starting to wear me down. Luckily, the work I'm doing out here doesn't really qualify as work as I'm just supposed to oversee some other people who actually do all of the work and then I fill out the paperwork. I've actually been fairly bored sitting in my truck listening to the radio and watching the others. Sometimes the geology gets interesting but the geology of the place is fairly well known so there are few surprises.

That said I get an extra $201 per day per diem for being on the road and even though the hotel eats up the majority of that I'm still able to save a fair amount extra.

              I voted 8.

That's cool. That's the same that senior managers make in my company, that is bigger than yours. Life is unfair . And taxes eat half of that so...

I need to get out of here!11

The best part is I get to keep the frequent flier miles (for the flights, hotel rentals, and car rentals) plus some hotels let you also get points for each night on their frequent stayer program, and Amex gives me points too. I charge it all on Amex then file an expense report so my boss ends up paying for it but I get free vacations out of it. It's like getting a raise.

This is the best job I've had in my 23 years of employment. Very challenging work in a critical field with people that have a "lets get this done together" attitude. Plus its 7 minutes from my house. Doesn't get much better than that.

Self-employed, basically as a writer. The freedom rocks.

At this point, it requires a lot of effort. As I get more and better quality clients, it will take less time to make good money. When I get it to the point where I have the free time I want, it will be a 9 or a 10.

For now, I give it an 8.
