  • They should hire some Swiss, that's what they should do.

Penalties on the WC are completly different beast than they are in a competition. There's a lot of stress involved.

We have a guy here, who's world famous in Belgium and all he did was play in one! game for about eight minutes in extra time and score the winning penalty versus spain in the quarter final in '86.
He still get's standing ovations when he enters a room...every day, several people will walk up to him saying: "you ruined my relationship that day, mate", or "I lost my job", "flunked my exams" and whatnot.
It's not the easiest thing to do, and noone should ever blame anyone for missing one.

        • I only just realised that Imran is trolling with his Beckham is a world class player with a poor media relationship position.

          Well played Imran

this world cup has been kinda **** - underperforming teams, too many yellows and reds, not enough goals, no one taking risks, too many defensive formations.
On those characteristics it is no where near as bad as the last European Championship - so poor that, with the exception of the Czech Republic, Greece were the best performers.

you think beckham handed in his captaincy because he didnt wanna be stripped of it by the next coach? go out on his own terms. "you can't fire me, I quit!"
Definetly. I still strongly suspect that he was forced out at half time by the likes of Gerard and Terry.

Lampard was a sensible risk that failed. He has a great strike record for England and taking him out would have removed a usually reliable source of goals and penalties. Joe Cole is very erratic - great one day poor the next. He wasn't bringing anything to the team against Portugal and was a sensible substitution.

Crouch, remains in my mind, an excellent forward. His strenght is not in scoring goals but in disrupting opposition defences to allow other players to find opportunities. He should have started every game after Owen was removed from the squad.

Anyway, watching France outplay Brazil was a good pick-me-up after the previous game - especially with Henry scoring. Allez les Bleus!

Nah, it's a recurring joke I'm doing on 'Poly. As the only regular French poster, I have to do some French folklore

                      • the frogs celebrated ukraines 2nd round win here also. but those guys who live in the haute savoie are so poor, they live in shacks, their villages are all run down I have no idea why zidane would go live on the french side of lake geneva.

i cant understand why its so poor on the french side when you drive west but so rich when you take the 'highway to switzerland' (thats what its called) and go east. must be the system.

                          • Here is hoping for a Germany-France final. Maybe we can refer to it as "World War III" .

                              • I'd love to see it happen but I think that the Germany vs. Italy match will be similar to the Netherlands vs. Italy semi final of Euro 2000 - the lead up to both games can be described as:

The hosts have put in a better than expected performance in the tournament and are now widely expected to progress to the final. The Italians while not particularly impressive have a solid defence and are quite capable of nicking a single goal win.

The drawback to an Italian win is that they progress to the final.
