Running a baseball team is about making money. Win then slash & burn tactics have cost the team far more money than otherwise. A lot of fans still have not forgotten the first fire sale and not have come back.
If you are a small market and have to sell a star every once in a while, the fans will understand. To have a fire sale, they'll turn on you.

I'm with Arrian, if my team had an established policy that was understood by me and fans that they would put together a serious contender every 5 years that stood a very good chance of getting to - or winning the WS, I'd be all for it and support the team.
That being said I don't know whether I'd pay to go see games in a year I knew my team wasn't even trying to be competitive, or buy jerseys of players I knew wouldn't be there in 2 years.

And that's the rub. People have to be willing to show up both during times of contention, and during times of "we're growing next year's stars!"
I recognize that it might not work. I just said one could rationally plan such a thing. And since the Marlins are unintentionally doing it ANYWAY, why not at least try to make a sensible pitch to their fans?
But no, ***** about the stadium some more, asshats!

Cause the fans already know its a bunch of BS. And I don't think it would even if 'rationally planning it that way', because fans connect to players... it's how they become really fanatical about teams. What incentive is there to connect when the guy can be dealt the next day.

That's true on most teams. Even teh evil "large market" teams. It's a free agency thing.

Not to such an extent.

Reports: Yankees sign 16-year-old Montero

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Yankees have signed 16-year-old Venezuelan catcher Jesus Montero to a $2 million deal, according to published reports Tuesday.
The Yankees outbid Boston, Cleveland and the Mets for Montero shortly after the international signing period began late Saturday night, several newspapers reported.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Montero is viewed as a possible successor to 34-year-old Jorge Posada behind the plate for the Yankees.
"We think he was the No. 1 amateur catcher," Mark Newman, the Yankees' senior vice president of baseball operations, told The New York Times. "He has arm strength, he has power, he can hit for average. I think he's the consensus No. 1 guy. He's like a high first-round draft pick."
