Venus appears close to the ecliptic - the sun's apparent path thru our sky - and near the sun so that it either precedes the sun (morning star) or follows it (evening star). If this "star" appeared in your SW sky at or shortly after sunset (9:30 PM) then its most likely Venus.Venus is more commonly visible in the morning, iirc. Hence the "morning star".Comment

Jup, Jupiter and Venus are usually the brightest Objects you can see at the sky (aside from Luna, Sol, Planes and UFOs of course
