No...very simply. We have not begun to exercise the conventional power that we could over the Iraqis. We tred very lightly due to political concerns. There is absolutely zero chance that the Shi'ites could "kick our ass outta Iraq" if we had the political will to stay.

There was a time when Iran may have provided that will for the U.S. Now I am not so sure. I sure hope that peaceful change in Iran can come about...

You misunderestimate the effect of having no secure areas. Every unit would be surrounded by hostiles and cut off. Sure, we'd slaughter on a biblical scale, but we'd still be overwhelmed and defeated.

Wide open plains/deserts are pretty easily defended against AK-47s and C4-filled Coke cans IIRC. We'd be kicked out of many or most cities certainly, but whether we'd leave Iraq would be a matter of domestic politics.

I agree with PLATO. It seems by Che's pov that the left hasn't learned anything about the US military. They projected what? 10,000 dead US forces going in to Iraq? 20,000? ...and of course they had the 4th largest army in the world and they would defeat us.

Che, not to worry. Plus, all they have to do is open enlistment to ex military up to 60 years old and a million guys like me would pull on the boots and hold Iraq while the younger guys took the fight to Iran.

Regarding the Turks, it's just an idea I believe would work. The Turks could benefit and the US could move on. The iraqis would be better than under Saddam and would have fellow moslems in control. Do they hate the Turks because of the Ottomans? I tend to doubt it. I don't think they were slaves under the Ottomans, but part of an empire. Am I wrong?
