  • According to tsn.ca, Neil Smith is no longer the GM of the New York Islanders.

Now, this is rather odd, considering that he was hired on about *a month ago*. This is either another sordid development in the ridiculous downfall of the once-proud Isles, or a sad side-effect of a family or health crisis.

Obviously, I hope it's the former.

How much did the Oilers pay for Peca last season? What was that? $4 million for a guy led the team to the finals. Toronto only has to pay $2.5 million, but then people want to play in Toronto.
Seriously, did you even watch hockey last season?

Peca certainly didn't lead them to the finals. The Oilers were lucky to make it to the playoffs, in spite of Peca.

It's actually the opposite, which is what's hilarious.

Most Toronto fans are the ones who recognize they don't have a hope in hell. All hope they have is usually gone halfway into the season, and they become defeatist.

Calgary fans are gung-ho, because we know we got the stuff. Toronto assembles hilarious teams each year, and Toronto fans cling onto any hope of change as being a good one, and think they'll make it. What's the expression, rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic?

              • Regarding Peca...I think it shows just how dumb JFJ really is as a GM.

Toronto was rated as 27th in the league in terms of even-strength scoring. Peca is supposedly here to help fix that problem.

There were 293 forwards who played 60+ games last year. There are only 11 of them that have a worse even-strength scoring rate than Peca: Adam Hall, Curtis Brown, Blair Betts, Mark Rycroft, Donald Brashear, Serge Payer, Mike Ricci, Brian Savage, Kirk Maltby, Jed Ortmeyer, Ryan Johnson.

                Impressive, isn't it?

                          A great deal.

Particularly when compared to what the Stars paid for Lindros $2.5 million.

All the pieces are coming together for Toronto. This will be a great year.
The Stars paid 1.5mil for Lindros (with performance bonus provisions).

I wrestled with what Peca was worth for a long time. I would have been OK with signing him for 3mil, but I still wouldn't have thought his 9 goals and 14 assists during the regular season last year warrant anywhere over 1.5.

The problem with him boils down to which Peca shows up? The regular season ghost or the playoff phenom?

If you don't have the cash to burn it's best not to gamble on the resurgence of an aging player, but then Toronto always has money to burn so a bad deal for KLowe might be a good deal for JFJ.

                            Delusional.

The Flames fail to make the playoffs nine years in a row, have one good year, then crash out again in the first round.

                            That ain't the stuff.

                            • The other problem is that in Edmonton there is a problem of where to put him.

The club have Horcoff and Stoll and want to give Schremp a good shot... How many more millions do sink into a 3rd-4th line centre.

The deal makes a lot of sense for Toronto if he plays second line (and keeps it up) but he wasn't going to be doing that in Edmonton. The Oilers want Stoll and Schremp to get that ice time.

All that said, I really liked Peca. I hope he does well in Toronto.

Okay, the one story I saw said $2.5 million. Must have been including the bonus provisions.

Looking at regular season stats can be misleading. Lindros puts up points, but is he probably won't be healthy for the playoffs.

Peca had an off-year during the last reg season, but look at what he did in the playoffs and the $2.5 million looks justified. And the one-year contract means he'll have to show what he can do.

And Lowe was never in the bidding. Peca wanted to live in Toronto, not Edmonton.
