I believe there were Long Dong missiles in inventory as well.

(Personally I think, Japan does need to beef up its defensive capabilities, but I'm terribly wary of a potential rise of militarism again. That said, even though they ought to arm themselves, I cannot forsee a situation where that wouldn't cause an arms race in East Asia.

None of them like each other much, so...)
Isn't Japan still under the US's nuclear shield?

        • New reports are saying that the analysis of TPD2's trajectory indicates the target was in the Pacific close to Hawaii. Shades of Pearl Harbor.

          • That begs the question:

IF the (presumably dud) missle actually did hit Hawaii, what would be the appropriate response?
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

            • It was probably supposed to hit the sea not land surface, but what IF it did?

The US, full aware the attack wasn't meant to hit land, would probably seek a public gesture to condemn the attack, like demand a UNSC resolution. No member state could deny it, since it would be a violation of territory.

If, on the other hand, the "accident" component was not recognised, it might actually result in some form of retaliation. Maybe this is what you're on about, but I estimate there'd be more gain in attracting public support than in a direct response: remember, any direct attack on NK might result in total commitment on behalf of NK versus SK, the region is that unstable.

              • If the missile were actually armed, we'd probably just wipe 'em out.

                • It probably wasn't armed, and frankly even unarmed I'd be all for a quick strike by a few dozen Cruise missiles at various missile program locations

                  • I'm curious, because they will probably get it right eventually, and if they're stupid enough to send it our way once, they'll probably be stupid enough to send it our way again.

                    • According to my high level sources from my military days the Nodong missile was aimed at the island of Lesbos.

No, I think you meant to say "Jong Dong".

What did Australia do when we hit it with Skylab? What did Canada do when the Soviets hit it with a sattelite?

Occassionally these things come down in unexpected places. If anything was damaged or anyone hurt, the appropriate response would be to demand compensation.

No one has yet explained to me why the world is in such a tizzy about this, given that there are no international treaties outlawing the development of missiles.

Because we don't give a damn about their supposed "right" to develop missiles that could deliver nuclear weapons. We view it, and rightly so, as an aggressive act and we don't want such weapons in the hand of an unstable, bat**** crazy regime like Dear Leader's.
