Actually , I speak from personal experience . The school I attend is very strict academically . The last two years are the toughest years of your school life ( academically , that is ) . What that led to that in the second-to-last year , all those who were not academically minded either left the school , or failed .

As a consequence , the last year was one of pure , unalloyed , and focused study , with no disruptive people distracting the serious students . There were no social tensions , no pettiness , no bull**** in the classroom or even outside it . The whole bunch of students was one group . Non-conformism was actually tolerated ( unlike in most schools , where real non-conformists have their life made hell ) , and not frowned at .

As a result , the grades of everyone , even the people who were not academically inclined but could still cope , went up .

Sounds like a great atmosphere for creating a bunch of insufferable, socially inept nerds.

There were sports , yes , but without the viciousness that characterises them in other times .

And I completely forgot to mention - in the past few years , I am sorry to say the school has been gender-segregated . That is one of the things which led to there being an atmosphere of almost meditative peace and calm in the classroom .

Why would any American give a **** about Scotland? That's about as silly as a Scotsman giving a **** about Finland...

still doesn't mean ****. I went to an inner city high school, and still performed very well on national standardized tests and AP tests.
