They were applying a practical aspect of Einsteinian relativity: The physics are the same whether the winshield of a plane flying at 400 mph crashes into a bird (in this case, a chicken) or whether a chicken flying a 400 mph (having been shot out of a cannon) crashes into a plane's windshield.
