  • If people are using the word 'gay' to mean something like 'naff' (whatever happened to that word?), I'm surprised if they hadn't considered how it has recently come to mean that in some quarters. Personally I have never used it that way, and nor will I - as it would appear to associate gayness with crapness and therefore to be insulting.

The last time I described something as gay was synchronised diving, which I may have seen during the last olympics, not because it was crap (though I thought it was crap) because it appeared to be a sport which might have a particular appeal to gay men, and it seems that quite a few people agreed with me. I expect Mr !Fun will flame me for saying that, but there we go ...

Hold the Presses!! - I just found something very, very wierd. I used the word 'naff' above, and looked it up to see where it actually came from.

Apparantly it comes from gay slang and used to dismissively describe hetrosexual people!

          • Let's say you have a buddy named Joe. Let's say, that you're an ******* and when you do something stupid, you say "you Joe'd it up." Should Joe not take that as an insult?

Change "Joe" to "Jack" and you have a real world example that doesn't seem to support your argument...

The difference, of course, being people named Jack come into a world where Jack already can mean "nothing," as opposed to changing the meaning of someone's name deliberately because you want to insult them.

                  • But people "born" gay today have already had the word gay turned into an insult, so the analogy is still valid.

                    • The people born today aren't old enough to know yet. Gay wasn't a general insult in the early 90s. Why be an *******? Why not just stop insulting people?

I don't see your point. "Jack" has several meanings just as "gay" does. Guys named Jack don't get upset when someone says something is "jacked up" because they understand that term is just a natural development of the language and not meant to insult them.

Well, uh, I don't insult people. I probably said that a few pages back. I ranted about not using bad words with people I don't know. I'm guessing, though, that the pretty stars up there have one of those insult thingies hidden in them.

                            Then you're being deliberately dense.

It would be an insult if it were directed at you. It's just a general statement. I don't understand why a huge segment of our population fights for the right to be jerks to other people.

I don't think so. I frankly think you simply don't have a point (or at least one worth making) and are instead tossing out irrelevancies like "joed up" in an attempt to construct at least the semblance of a coherent argument.
