Yes, if a majority of gays find it offensive then it should be considered offensive. And those that continue to use the term after they know that they find it offensive even though they themselves don't think it is, are being insensitive. No self rationalization makes them lesser jerks.
If you're talking to someone that you know doesn't find it offensive then I don't have a problem with it. But you'd better be sure because sometimes, even close friends, may not tell you that they think it's offensive because they value your friendship and cut you some slack.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

Just because some people choose not to think of it as an insult does not mean they're too ****ing stupid to see the alternative choice.
Yes, it just means that they're inconsiderate jack asses when they understand why it is insulting to other people but continue to go around using it as a derogatory manner anyways, and then become offended themselves when someone is insulted by their complete lack of respect to anyone.
As to the point, I do agree with the Asher KH MrFun side - It is quite insulting to gay people, and it was derived from seeing homosexuals as inferior. However, there is a different question - and that is in a society of multiple flags and identities can a mixed crowd of people use these kinds of words jokingly?

I never use words that can be considered offensive with people I don't know. And I never use words that can be considered offensive with people that think such words are offensive. And I never use words that can be considered offensive unless a person that might consider it offensive has already used it an inoffensive manner.

ditto.

you never take shots at your friends? what kind of a friend are you, anyway?

I don't think that "mongoloid spearchuck" "barbarian mountainman" "russian hick", and many other racial slurs my friends use against each other are anything but offensive. However, they still love each other.

Eh. I've been called much worse than an inconsiderate jackass.
Also, Asher doesn't particularly offend me; I just think his behavior is hypocritical. It is especially hypocritical because... at what point in this thread did I use gay in a derogatory manner? You probably don't want to search the thread so I'll tell you - I didn't.
Context is key. If it's part of a group of friends who all rag on each other with abandon, that's one thing. Using it in general conversation w/o knowing your audience is another.

I call my black friends '******' all the time. I call my gay friends 'gay' all the time (in the common pejorative sense, like 'your shirt is gay').
Somehow I doubt I'm either homophobe or racist, especially considering that they've remained friends with me for years.
I doubt you walk up to a random black homosexual and go "Hey what's up my gay ****** friend?" Context and friendship is everything (cop out, I know, but most people understand - you might have a woman friend who you call "Big Boobied *****" but if you did that to a random girl I guarantee you would be slapped with a gigantic trout :P)
Gay is a little different from terms like ******, I think, because it is often used by homosexuals to describe themselves. You are far more likely to see someone giving a speech or talking in conversation and saying "I'm gay" than "I'm a ******."
Doesn't hide the fact that most everybody I know uses gay as a derogatory term.

My friends and I have mostly outgrown calling each other gay, although I never really indulged in that particular insult. If I use it now, it's only around my friends, and only for the express purpose of sounding like an idiot.
That said, yes, all sorts of unspeakable insults are hurled around in the soundproof basement we inhabit.

But rah! That makes you an uber-PC Nazi freak!
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.
Saying gay people shouldn't be insulted by using their name as an insult is like saying Black people shouldn't be offended by the Confederate Flag.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

But the founding of the Confederacy had nothing to do with slavery . . . . . . .
just ask Slowwy or MTG.
