There's a new king in town: Intel's Core2 obliterates Athlon 64 FX

Yeah, they were on systems Intel set up. But given what we know of the architectural improvements in Core2 and the existing performance of Core (which gives the FX competitive performance), it's not surprising.

Yeah, when I saw the new direction that Intel was going I knew things were looking up for them.

GENERATION 35: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation. Social experiment.
Other interesting facts about Conroe/Core2:
- 2MB or 4MB of shared L2 cache, depending on which version
- It can issue and retire 4 instructions per clock (Athlon 64/64 FX and Pentium 4/Pentium M/Core are 3)
- The entire SSE engine is 128-bit now (all prior chips have had 128-bit registers, but 64-bit data clocks -- 2 cycle instruction latencies are now 1 cycle)
- Thermal ceiling of 65W -- less than half of the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition chips, and less than most of AMD's dual core chips

The thing is, Intel doesn't have a viable product until the Core Duo fills their entire product line. The current generation is a POS. They run extremely hot and suck down the juice like nobody's business (I know, I have one).
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Do you not understand what this thread is about, Dan?
Core2 Duo is what's replacing the Pentium D on the desktop, and Core Duo in the laptop markets. It is filling out their line.

I understand what the thread is about. I understand that the first Core Duo chips will start entering the channels of trade at the end of July and that in the meantime Intel will have a lot of unsold Pentium D chips on its hands.

Core 2 Duo, Danny. Core Duo's been out for a while.

Core Duo's been out for a while just for mobile, right?
Edit: Good cross-edit. I approve.

Some vendors (eg, Apple) use them in their desktops (iMac) as well.
But yes, they're mobile-targetted.
Core2 Duo is a much improved Core Duo.
