Yeah, they were on systems Intel set up. But given what we know of the architectural improvements in Core2 and the existing performance of Core (which gives the FX competitive performance), it's not surprising.

Other interesting facts about Conroe/Core2:
- 2MB or 4MB of shared L2 cache, depending on which version
- It can issue and retire 4 instructions per clock (Athlon 64/64 FX and Pentium 4/Pentium M/Core are 3)
- The entire SSE engine is 128-bit now (all prior chips have had 128-bit registers, but 64-bit data clocks -- 2 cycle instruction latencies are now 1 cycle)

The thing is, Intel doesn't have a viable product until the Core Duo fills their entire product line. The current generation is a POS. They run extremely hot and suck down the juice like nobody's business (I know, I have one).I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat.
