  • DHS: NYC has "No Icons, No Monuments Worth Protecting"

New York has no national monuments or icons, according to the Department of Homeland Security form obtained by ABC News. (Click here for the actual document.) That was a key factor used to determine that New York City should have its anti-terror funds slashed by 40 percent--from $207.5 million in 2005 to $124.4 million in 2006.

The formula did not consider as landmarks or icons: The Empire State Building, The United Nations, The Statue of Liberty and others found on several terror target hit lists. It also left off notable landmarks, such as the New York Public Library, Times Square, City Hall and at least three of the nation's most renowned museums: The Guggenheim, The Metropolitan and The Museum of Natural History.

The form ignored that New York City is the capital of the world financial markets and merely stated the city had four significant bank assets.

New York City is home to Chase, JP Morgan, Citi Group, The New York Stock Exchange, The Commodities Exchange, American Express, George Soros funds, Michael Gabelli's funds, Lazard Frere and Salomon Brothers, to name just a few of the more prominent banking interests located there.

The formula did note a commuter population of more than 16 million around the city twice struck by fundamentalist terrorists and twice more targeted in plots halted in pre-operational stages. It noted the more than eight million residents and the largest rail ridership in the nation - more than five million. It is those commuters and rail riders who are expected to suffer most from the cuts since mass transit is listed on most DHS alerts as the top terror target. (Click here for the Strategic Threat Document obtained by ABC News.)

The report lists as classified "visitors of interest destination city," immigration cases, suspicious incidents and FBI cases. New York City is home to the largest FBI field office in the country, which actively monitors 24/7 the Iranian Mission. The city has also had the most significant terror trials in the nation and is home to one of the largest air hubs in the nation.

Translation: We don't need to protect NYC, it's full of Libruls, queers amd 'Murika-haters.

    Yeah, New York has nothing...

      Way to simplify it.

      Have you considered these possibilities?
      1. Report done by committee of incompetents, like everything else in the government (and not just this administration)?
      2. That the rest of America is realizing that NYC is nothing more than a dirty, festering cesspool, not a glorious, clean city with a storied history like Chicago?

Maybe they mean "will have"? At this rate and with this stupidity...

So what are things they *do* consider national monuments or icons? I'm especially surprised the statue of liberty didn't make the list. IIRC its owned by the federal government and is a wonder of the world for crying out loud! We certainly can't afford to lose 1 free specialist in all of our north american cities!

The problem is that the French built it, so it's now a no-no.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

Well, that is your translation. Basically, the DHS is full of bureaucrats who come up with legalistic crap that doesn't work in the real world.
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

click through to the actual form.

It counts 6000 targets, including over 4000 commercial targets.

National Monuments is probably some jargon - maybe it means places actually belonging to the Park Service.

The Statue of Liberty is in New Jersey, of course, as Id expect Imran of all people to know.

                    Silly reporters.

                      Possible DHS-to-English translations:

                      (1) :Red, not blue , gets the green .
                      (2) So, Guiliani thinks he's gonna run for President, huh?
                      (3) Petty politics trumps national security.

Actually, if you remember correctly, the Statue of Liberty's location was not decided in the Ellis Island case, and thus is a part of New York.

Ellis Island was split up. With the historical main area deemed part of New York and the added on area deemed part of New Jersey. Even if the Statue doesn't court, Ellis Island sure should.

No. It's physically within a New Jersey county, but is a part of New York as per the colonial charter.

According to wikipedia, the island is within Hudson County, and therefore within New York State.

You guys miss the genius here: Now the terrorists will revise their OWN targets after seeing that the U.S. finds New York rather useless. Rumor has is that some 5 person town on the border with Mexico is getting $1.2 billion from the DHS with the hope that the terrorists will follow the money trail and make the border too scary to cross.
