In the adult world the lower you go on the social ladder the closer you get to recreating 7th grade. Prisons are esentialy the equivilent of 7th grade, just with more violence As we all go to public schools and experence a rather uniformly bad 7th grade as you are unable to control your associations with others. In adulthood you CAN do this by getting higher social status, the primary benifit of which is getting to be around better people. So ones opinion of adulthood vs childhood depends a lot on ware you end up in social ladder in adulthood. If its high they you see adulthood as better because it is, if its low you might lookback on childhood fondly because adulthood sucks for you.
Companions the creator seeks, not corpses, not herds and believers. Fellow creators, the creator seeks - those who write new values on new tablets. Companions the creator seeks, and fellow harvesters; for everything about him is ripe for the harvest. - Thus spoke Zarathustra, Fredrick Nietzsche

It comes to this: the only book you really need to read in order to understand either childhood or the rest of life is Lord of the Flies.

Or: Decency, rationality, and a democratic impulse are never a match for sadism and a will to power.

So why do you see it as a mess how people interelate? It kind of fascinates me. Yeah it'd be nice if it could be better. But large cities create interesting social conventions. And you just can't expect everyone to give a **** about everyone. I don't do it. I have a narrow focus.

I can't remember what I thought at that age. But my childhood was not pretty. I'm just so glad to be an adult. And it's only in the past 9 months have things really fell into place for me. And I now see hope. Makes it seem like all the crap I went through was worth it.

You guys just can't imagine how much a relief it is being out of the situation I grew up in. Just thinking about it now brings back the memories. I really don't even want to think of what it was like when I was 5. But I doubt I thought much of the future, only of my current situation.

That is an interesting take on life. May I assume you are up there, looking down, and making this observation? One of "the better people" I must say, I think you are wrong in this theory.

Yep; I work with all sorts of folks who are higher up on that scale, and they all still conform to 7th grade types -- nerds, bullies, airheads, etc. And while I'm happily married, watching my single 30something friends try to date causes all sorts of nasty flashbacks to Jr. High.

I was half thinking of the form that reality takes as well. I was kind of focusing on people though as I reread my first post. That's not all I meant by this thread. It's odd to be born into a world. As you grow up you realize more about it. Oceans, hot days, breezes, and birds singing and a spider spinning a web of doom for a fly that landed on a pile of crap and someone's hotdog.

It's not just the complexity, it's the chaotic nature of everything. Not only do you have the odd paths the minds of your fellow human beings take, but you have a universe that throws stones. Then, you have the biological imperative of urgent procreation that hits like going over the top of a roller coaster blindfolded.

It's just a bizzarre place to grow up, and we fit right in.

I went to CFC but the OT mod blew a cork when I mentioned that Italy didn't uphold its treaty obligations. The Ahole thought I was picking on all Italians or something. Threatened me, so I banned the place.

chaos is interesting. How things worked out the way they did. All the crap I went through to get where I am now. And now I'm pretty happy. But if I didn't go through that crap, I wouldn't have met certain people, and who knows how different life could have been. Though it could have been better, but I can't imagine it any other way.

And then thinking about near death experiences... Don't get me started.

People generally have two views of childhood. That its pure, innocent and void of all conflict, anxiety and disruption. And anything from the adult world necessarily corrupts and destroys that perfect childhood paradise.

Or that its a nasty time filled with nasty, brutish children who are all cruel, reckless, immature, and so unlike the mature, responsible, benevolent adults.

The truth is adults are just bigger and have more power.
There's three views of childhood, really.
