  • It should be pointed out that Alva predicted 0-0 for all of the first seventeen games. An interesting strategy, but a pessimistic forecast.

    • Actually they've been sucking badly for some time now, I was just expecting Ecuador to suck worse. Both have had absolutely atrocious practice campaigns leading up to today's match.

Well, 10/24 people predicted that Poland wouldn't win this game, but they did have a terrible WC last time round.

                          • Are people are allowed to play this game by submitting predictions each day, instead of before the whole tournament? That seems unfair to me.

It's clearly an advantage to be able to assess performances in the tournament and then use that as a basis for predictions. So, having seen all the group A teams yesterday, people making submissions now are better placed to estimate performances for the remaining group games.

To respond, everybody who made the early predictions would have to be able to change them, based on each passing days results and news. This sounds like a lot of work for any administration and analysis of the prediction data.

Because I wanted to see everyone's guesses together I spent two hours fiddling with the data in Excel last night, so I could post the reports I did, and had intended to for the remaining games, but if the data is to be continually edited and revised, then it'll be too much work.

If Dauphin doesn't mind constantly editing his copy of the data then OK, but I won't be able to maintain my data set.

A seperate prediction league, based on having seen each of the teams play their first game, might be good. Personally I haven't been studying the form of all the sides prior to the tournament, nor have I seen them all play. In past years I've enjoyed making predictions based on seeing everybody once in tournament conditions, which is a more informed estimate than the relative crap-shoot of pre-tournament predictions.

                            • Well people who guess late are losing out on a chance for points in the first round or two.

Plus for my part I have little more than a hazy idea who played on the first day, let alone who won. But I won't make a fuss if I'm disqualified, I don't want to unbalance stuff. (unless you guys are just scared of an American.... )

It's not unfair, it's stupid not to do it. If you don't even know who's playing, how can you reasonably predict the outcome?
