  • World Cup Prediction Thread - Group Stage

The World Cup starts two weeks today, and as is the tradition there will be a prediction thread for the competition. (Normally Paul organises and administers these competitions but I understand that he has discontinued his involvement).

I want to confirm the format and/or any changes to be made. From memory this is the general format:

    Things to predict:
    1) The world champions.
    2) The top scorer in the competition.
    3) The 8 group winners in the first round.
    4) The 8 teams finishing second in their group in the first round
    5) The scores in each game.

I think the scoring system before was something along the lines of:

    1) 10pts for predicting the World Champion, 3pts if they are runner-Up.

    2) 10pts for predicting the winner of the golden boot, 3pts if they are runner-up.

    3) 5pts for predicting the winners of each group. 2pts if they actually place second.

    4) 5pts for predicting the second placed teams in each group. 2pts if they actually place first.

    5)
In the group stages: 2+2. i.e 2pts if the result ('home' win. draw, loss) is the same as the predicted score + 2 points if the actual score is predicted.
In the round of 16: 3+3
    In the Q/finals: 4+4
    In the Semi-finals: 5+5
In the 3rd/4th Playoff and the final: 6+6

    Other Rules:
Predictions can be made or changed upto 5 minutes before kick off.
If you wish to change your prediction do so in a new post.
Changing predictions could potentially lead to abuse by people editing their posts - therefore it is advised that you do not edit any of your posts in these threads.
The standard rule that has previously applied and shall be applied is that the result used is the result after ordinary time - extra time and penalty shoot-outs do not count. This is relevant to the knock-out phase where draws can be predicted for the result.
In the group stage, should lots need to be drawn for placing teams, the final placings are the placing as per the draw of lots.
The top scorer is that player who receives the FIFA golden boot award, which includes goals scored during extra time but does not include goals scored during penalty shoot-outs.

Does that all seem correct? Any ammendments to the basic format? Anything missing? Other rules I've missed out?

The world cup as it WILL GO for Germany:

Beating all other 3 teams, we land on spot #1. In round of 16 we encounter either Sweden or Paraguay, depending on who makes second in their group. England as first is likely, though I'd give much to see England in our round of 16 match if it means they finished their group as second. After beating any of these 3, we get to the quarters. In the quarters we'll see either Argentina or Holland, I don't see many other possibilities, maybe Portugal. Holland has no qualities, and we'll beat our old rival from the 80s Argentina anytime now. Means semis for us. Here we'll meet either Italy or France, depending on the outcome of their mutual quarter. If we manage this, it's only Brazil left in the finals to beat.

Our final round consists of following enemies, with decreasing chance of advancing: Sweden/Paraguay, Argentina/Holland, France/Italy, Brazil.

I think Swiss hooligans will be more of a problem than the national team. Or is the Swiss national team a bunch of hooligans?

                    Anyway: Filipescu kicking Basel ass.

On a more serious side: We all know that there will be some "surprises" and that not only Eureopan+South American + Mexico will go to the next round, so everyone is looking for where it's most likely to happen. The Swiss group is simply a candidate for such a "surprise"...
