Hungarians (and Croats) in Vojvodina are pacified and don't have a majority in the province. I don't forsee the matter of independance of Vojvodina even being brought to the table in any forseeable future.

The main question here is how will this impact Serbia & Montenegro's World Cup team? Are there many Montenegrans on it?

No, the main question is what the impact will be on the Eurovision Song Festival.

I predict they'll get sued at the Hague by people taking offense from the notion of mounting a Negro.

yeah it's a pretty racist name for a country. but Monteafro doesn't sound quite right.

I say we just use the local name, Crna Gora

Gangerolf, do you have any relatives there...? I remember you using a few Croatian words before, and also you know the local name for Montenegro so I was wondering? Don't answer if it's too personal.

Being a landlocked country with enemies around sucks, I feel bad for serbia. For real.

They lost their historical homeland to the albanians, and now they lose montenegro and become landlocked, the west keep raping them.

West little to do with it. Their own leaders screwed them up.

They'll have to call the team 'The Former Serbian & Montenegrin Republic of Serbia & Montenegro'.

In fact, formal secession would be some way ahead yet, as there is diplomatic paperwork to sort out so it won't affect the World Cup but I expect it will affect the qualifiers for Euro 2008. Unless there are a ton of Montenegrins in the side, I expect Serbia will inherit the place and the new country will have to wait for UEFA & FIFA membership and play in the following tournament (WC qualifiers for 2010).

I look forward to seeing how the Montenegrin football team (from pop 700,000) gets on. The pro-independents have long dreamed of foreign embassies in Podgorica. Now they can give teams like Scotland a run for their money too.

Vet, no relatives there. But I've been to Croatia and Bosnia. Picked up a few words, I guess. I also speak a little Czech, which is surprisingly similar.
