  • Why do you support the sports teams you do?

This occurred to me when I said Liverpool were my second team in the FA Cup thread...

When I first came to the UK, I was enrolled at a north London school where the local team was Arsenal - but I decided I didn't like them, so to annoy the Arsenal fans I decided to support Liverpool instead...

The year I moved to East London was the year West Ham beat Arsenal in the FA Cup and the rest as they say is history...

As for the Cincinnati Bengals IIRC it was the '85 season when we started watching the NFL and no team really jumped out at me till I saw a game where this team in a cool kit thrashed the crap out of 'America's Team', the Cowboys (whom I disliked) in a high-scoring game of offensive brilliance!

Now I'm in Cardiff I also follow the Bluebirds' (Championship Football) results, and have started going to the Cardiff Blues Rugby Union games (seeing their last home Celtic League game tonight)

Other than that there are the Welsh national teams, and I'll be supporting England in the World Cup...

So, any interesting stories out there?
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

Maybe this is specific for Croatia, but here you don't actually choose which fotball team to support. You support the one from your city and there are virtually no exceptions. Choosing is something that you can do with regards to which NBA team to support or cricket or something like that.

Most people tend to naturally support a home team.
I've always loved the Cowboys. Meredith to Hayes. Staubach. Lilly.

Yes, I agree it is mostly home teams (Apart from Man Utd fans...)

Apart from Liverpool and Cincinnati, all the rest are considered home teams for me.

West Ham was my local London team, now my local teams are the Cardiff ones - and obviously the national ones.

you guys see what happened in basle last night? it was the last game of the season, fc bale v fc zurich, zurich scored in the 94th minute to win the game and the championship (a tie would have meant bale were champions for the third straight year). basle supporters rushed the field and attacked the zurich players, the police fired rubber bullets into the crowd, outside the stadium they rioted and trashed the streets. the police from three cantons were used to spray them with water guns.

I'm a Canadiens fan because it's my home city and becoming a Canadiens fan in this city is nearly inescapable.

Was an Expos fan, but became alienated by their terrible years of decline. Then I became a Red Sox fan because they had some former 'spos like Martinez. I stuck with the Sox even after he left.

not a fan of the CFL.

I picked Philly as my NFL team because I'm a sucker for punishment, no other reason really.

and NBA, I pick whatever team is most likely to make my NBA-knowledgeable friends laugh, because I have very little clue.

                  Passion of that sort.

There are only two options: your hometown team, or your parent(s')'s team. Anything else is just silly.
Now I was born in Liverpool, and my dad's a Liverpool fan, but I grew up in Newcastle and they're my mum's team. For the purposes of winning stuff then clearly I made the wrong choice, but since I left Liverpool before I could even say their name, then that wouldn't have been a proper "hometown" team.
I'll be following South Korea again this World Cup, because I hate England fans (don't really care about the team itself, although it's always good to see Newcastle players doing well internationally - not that there are many in the England squad. ), and love to watch attacking football from a supposed underdog. The Koreans seemed to enjoy playing, whether they were in front or behind, and that makes a big difference to me.
I'm ashamed to say that since I've never crossed the pond, then I chose the Minnesota Vikings purely for the fact they play in purple. This also applies to Bordeaux and Fiorentina (who are coming back to what they used to be), although I've actually seen Bordeaux play, which has to be a plus.

I have supported the Notre Dame Fighting Irish because it is the most prominent catholic college in the Midwest and the structure of the Midwestern parochial school system (catholic college prep) was always plugged into Notre Dame. For instance, my high school was named the Irish. A lot of students with Irish heritage go to these schools. I'm part Irish. Notre Dame football scores are announced at our high school football games, etc. So there is and was a big connection.

I support the DC United soccer club because of geography and the fact that it's the only Major League Soccer team that has a genuine following. The Barra Brava rules!

I grew up in Ohio and the closest NFL/baseball city was Cincinnati. However, my family, especially my mother's side, was always a fan of the Cleveland clubs.

My National League team is the Washington Nationals because of geography. My American League team is the Cleveland Indians. My great grandmother on my mother's side went to all of the Indians day games . I never did like the Baltimore Orioles because Baltimore is like a small provincial town compared to DC. (I've got nothing against Baltimore, but Baltimore really has a separate identity to DC.)

I refuse to root for any NFL team since Art Modell moved the Browns to Baltimore.

The Cleveland Cavs continue to be my favorite NBA team. I don't like the Washington Bul.... I mean Washington Wizards.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I started supporting England because I was spending a summer at Oxford the first time Romania failed to qualify for the World Cup. Since then they've been my default team to support in case Romania fails to qualify for the World Cup or European Championship (sadly, this is the third time in a row)... please don't tell my coworkers.

Not really an Ice Hockey fan, but I've seen the odd Cardiff Devils game in the Elite League here - but that is probably because their rink is literally across the road from where I live!

The Blues game was great, played in the Millennium Stadium (twice in two days for me!) because the Arms Park was used for a hospitality tent for the FA Cup yesterday, and we beat the Celtic League leaders Leinster by 40-31 so we will probably finish 3rd out of 11, as that was the last home game...
