I was born in the bay area so I've always been a 49ers and Giatns fan. Though when I'm not familiar with a sport, I ususally defer to New York and I have no idea why. Thusly I love the Knicks and the Rangers, but I hate the Yankees and the Mets. Odd isn't it.
Oh and Boston is always my second city that I defer to. So the Celtics and Red Sox are my second favorite teams. Actually I played on the Red Sox in Little League so I think that's where the whole Boston thing comes from.

Kalonike: Only we women? Poor Greece!
That said, the only sport I really ever watch regularly is baseball, so basically I am a Yankees fan. I will root for the Mets unless they play the Yankees.
I will root for the Knicks, Nets, Jets, Giants, or Rangers if they make it to the playoffs. I really could care less for the Islanders or Devils.

though my dad did take me to White Sox games when I was a kid, too, even though he's a Cub fan... I'm more of a Chicago fan, although my heart lies with the Cubs. Though, I'm starting to treat them like I do the Blackhawks... complete and utter contempt for the way they run their organization.
I started getting into the White Sox a few years ago when I worked with Kenny Williams (White Sox GM) son. It was cool being 1 degree away from a guy who is the GM of a Major League franchise. I started following the team more and I liked the way the organization was being run. Last year was great with the World Series... it was great for Chicago. But still, I think it would be better if the Cubs won.
I recognize that if my family was from another town, I'd probably be a die-hard fan of that city's sports teams... so this is totally the result of where I was born and who I was born to... much the same way I feel nationalism is stupid... pride in sports teams is probably stupid because there is nothing inherently special about the connection I have to the city or the teams. But it's all in good fun and I enjoy it. So what the hell.
My professional selections are either based in Michigan (Tigers, Lions, Pistons, Red Wings) or are teams whose style of play at some point won me over. College teams are numerous, and I've tended to cheer for teams that my friends or relatives like in the numerous cases where I'm watching a game between two teams I don't have much of a connection with.
One of my favorite all time teams is the Northern Ireland World Cup team from 1982. They were a blast to watch, underdogs the whole time etc. A great performance.

Hey Goldmember, Hey Goldmember!
I grew up in Southwestern CT, and the nearest city w/major sports teams is NYC. Thus, I'm typically a fan of NY teams. The only sport I really care about is baseball.
After not watching baseball for ~10 years, I started again once I graduated college. In 1998. Damn, was that a great Yankees team. I was hooked.
I care a little for Premiership soccer. When I was @ St. Andrews, some friends I met up there were ManU fans, so I kinda got into that (the fact that ManU utterly rocked that year helped). But there is also Cardiff City FC, a nothing little team that I root for b/c it's my Dad's team, and they've done nothing for a very long time. Hope, however, springs eternal.
What annoys me most in Bulgaria is that everybody expects you to support either CSKA or Levski (the two top Bulgarian clubs). I often get asked if I support Levski or CSKA and I always answer that I support Beroe (my hometown team which has not won anything since 1985).
In NBA I support the Celtics because of Larry Bird and because their colours are the same as Beroe's colours (green and white)
Do you need reasons to support a team? The nice thing abour sports is that you need to be rational about it.

Nothing... NOTHING!!?
They have a rich history and are the only non English team to have won the FA Cup in 1927, beating Arsenal! (OK, that was a long time ago... )
Anyway, lately they recently got promoted to the Championship (the league below the Premiership) and almost got into the playoffs this season.
They have a great manager in Dave Jones and a decent, young team - expect them to be in the fight for promotion into the Premiership next season...
Oh and they have sort of become the feeder club for West Ham, seeing as we've taken about 3-4 players from them in the last couple of years.
I never really supported the Chargers since I'm not into football that much but if I did I would definately drop them after this. I was mildly upset when they demanded 80 million to renovate the stadium a few years back but it was supposedly needed so I went along without fussing. I was slightly ticked off when they demanded, and got, and extortionist agreement where the city paid full price for all unused ticket; tickets which the city could not resell or donate to charity. It just didn't seem that big of a deal when the Chargers demanded absolute control and sole ownership of the stadium parking fees. I was very upset when the greedy ass owner demanded the city give him $1 billion in free land or build a brand new stadium (right after we spent $80 million refurbing the current stadium) and personally thought we should just send the extortionists packing. As if that isn't enough the greedy son of a ***** just unvailed his "new and improved" parking fee structure.
Get this, the ****ing owner of the Chargers wants to raise the parking fee on RVs (which people use for their tailgate parties) from $20 to, I **** you not, [i]$150 per game[/]! Screw him and the horse he rode in on. I can't wait to be rid of these greedy bastards who are a net drain on the city budget and who always are demanding ever larger subsidies. Pro Sports needs to be regulated with in an inch of their lives to prevent such extortion.

This is a great argument for socialized sports, such as the Green Bay Packers, where the city owns the teams.
I support Malmö FF in football, my dad used to go to games as a kid and lie behind the goal and watch, haha. This was a long time ago but there was alot of people at the games then as well. So I was born in the area of the club and it's the club of my father's choice, not very high odds of me being a fan as well.
It's basically the same here that you support the team where you live, sometimes there might be some gloryhunters but all the real fans think less of them. Like some guy from the deep forest coming to the big city with an out of place dialect and trying to join when it's good times, support your own team please....
Funny thing that most major clubs have supporting chapters around the nation but we don't have nearly as many as the others, even though we have at least all the merits of the others. Maybe only people that have moved from here stick with the club, the others see us as embarassing because we're from the Scania region of Sweden with our distinct dialect and partially danish heritage.
It's candy. Surely there are more important things the NAACP could be boycotting. If the candy were shaped like a burning cross or a black man made of regular chocolate being dragged behind a truck made of white chocolate I could understand the outrage and would share it. - Drosedars
