Well, as one of the small number of people in this site to have dealt with the INS, being a legal immigrant to the US, I can say that the the people in the uS today make legal immigration a pain in the ass, and thank god I didn't have to deal with immigration authorities post 9/11.

As for this being a nation of immigrants, while there has always been a nativist anti-immigrant current in the Units States since independence, it was in the 20th Century that the nativists won. It's easy for people to spout how their ancestors were immigrants and not illegal, blah, blah, blah. Well, yes, fine, that maybe technically true, back in the days before widespread passports, visas, endless documentation, and all the other **** that makes moving between states in the modern world a pain.

When all you needed was a ticket, legal immigration is a damn sight easier. NOw immigration is a hastle. Don't be surprised if the difficulty and inequaties in the current immigration regime cause people who want to work (no one pay 20,000 to be shipped like an animal accross the pacific, or makes a possibly fatal trip accross the border to get welfare checks) to break the laws to get that work.

And the fact is the current immigration debate certainly ahs racial overtones that mean many current immigrants to the US do sympathise more with the illegals than the nativists. After all, modern immigration is by non-"White" people, which is why the Nativists were able to win in the 1920's to shut down the flow of immigrants.

NO. But you keep bringing up Mexico's immigration laws, which are a non sequitur.

Mexico's identity is not connected to immigration - they don't consider themselves a nation of immigrants, never really have. So like most poor states built upon a very old identity, they make it hard to join up.

The US has no such excuse.
