Why didn't MOBIUS start this thread? Is he even worthless at being worthless?

This isn't a big deal in Mexico. It's like Chunakah, a holidy that Americans have imposed on a subculture to celebrate that subculture.

In Chicago, Mexican indpendence day is the day that's the big celebration. Cinco de Mayo seems to be bigger for gringos than Chicanos.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

Why do we limit legal immigration Sava? What is your decision on what that limit should be if you believe that there should be one?

Considering that America is a country built on immigration, and the blood of those who land it once was... it's the least we could do.
You'd be hard pressed to find a country that wasn't.

Plus, the main arguments against the amnesty I hear are:
"MY TAXES ARE PAYING FOR THEM AND THEY DONT PAY TAXES"
Well, if they are made legal, they will pay taxes. Problem solved. And if there are so many of them, think of how much more revenue that will bring into the mix.
They are here to be cheap labor for the cheap labor lobby. the rest of us just have to deal with the externalized costs as those of you on the left put it.

But no... there's always that knee-jerk reaction... "what they did was ILLEGAL... ZOMFG!"

Tearing off the sticker on your mattress is illegal.

All these people are guilty of doing is trying to come to a land of opportunity and build a better life for their family. Hell, America is such an awesome country, people will break the law to come here. And you want to punish people for that?
answer my first question and all will be made clear.

America already has a problem with it's image around the world... are you trying to make things worse?
Lets fix our image by giving people stuff, that will work.

If Bush were smart, he'd do it. Too bad he can't convince the mouthbreathing racists in his base that it's a good idea.
The law isn't being enforced, but yes if Bush doesn't like the current immigration laws he should campaign for them to be abolished. so should any democrat or republican that thinks likewise.

As dumb as he is, he knows that illegals are here to stay. He knows how vital they are to the economy. He knows about the security problems. But he's stuck in a terrible position.

The Democrats will take advantage of this because their base supports immigrants rights and is more acceptable to the idea of amnesty. Plus, they would gain even more support if the amnesty happened. Imagine, a few million new citizens... what party would they support? And I can tell you now, immigrants would vote in greater numbers than the average American born citizen does.
The democrats will try to take advantage of the issue, but the best that they can hope is to make republican voters stay home, and not have their own voters stay home as well.

This is the reality of the situation. Some sort of reform is going to happen, and it's probably going to benefit the Dems more than the Repukes. With the people here already, you won't be able to get rid of them. It's just not going to happen. So you have to assimilate them. The Senate plan is probably going to be the one that eventually gets passed... in some form or another. But I don't know how long it will take before a compromise is reached.
We're not doing such a great job of assimilating them, and the senate plan didn't even pass the senate.

Che is right. Cinco de Mayo is kind of fake. Its the Taco Bell of Mexican Holidays.

Makes sense an gringo like Sloww would be the one to note it.

Yes, so many Americans are lining up to pick strawberries for 2 dollars an hour.

Sava, let's assume everything in your observation is correct.
I hate to sound anything like a stinking Commie, but what does that say about business? Maybe they need to raise wages.

Without a pool of cheap labor... the prices of many goods and services will rise dramatically.

But yes, you are right, it's all about those CEO's.

I'm just wondering if I should even bother to continue to post in this thread... or if being around such stupidity is going to somehow lower my IQ.

Here's another idea... how about instead of trying to punish undocumented immigrants... how about we punish the companies and employers who hire them?

                            Go after the big fish?

Oh wait, no... those are mainly white people. We can't be punishing white people.

This whole issue is very complex.

The easiest solution is to give amnesty to those who have been here for a long time. Stop the flow of people trying to come here now by securing our borders... and then reform our immigration system to allow more people to come here legally... thus, getting rid of the demand for illegal immigration.

Beyond that, I suppose there is a need for a guest worker program of some sort.

I'm not going to speculate on the particulars though.
