I really wouldn't worry about what kids learn at school. I never did any languages in high school. When you grow up in the 'burbs, 20,000 miles from nowhere, there doesn't seem much point. Then I got the chance to go to France for a while and, because I needed it, I picked it up in six months.
The embarrasing part was listening to my friends who had taken French in high school... ueghh. Ever heard someone using French words with English diction, and sounding like they just walked off a sheep station? Of course PotM's teachers will probably more competent than what we had back then, but even so...
My French teacher wouldn't have allowed me to speak French with my flemish accent. Besides in the end French pronounciation is not that particularly hard, is it?"An archaeologist is the best husband a women can have; the older she gets, the more interested he is in her." - Agatha Christie

I wish I had taken Spanish instead of French in high school, it definitely would come in handy now. I would have never thought that significant numbers of latino immigrants would have ever made it to Virginia, but they're here. I've tried keeping Spanish phrase books in the office, but the problem is that I don't have time to flip through the thing when a patient is right in fornt of me. Without the book I tend to lapse into French.
Unfortunately I learned French from a teacher born and raised in Georgia. I would never attempt to speak French to a Frenchman. It would make him angry."I say shoot'em all and let God sort it out in the end!

I've had years of French at school, but I tend to speak English whenever I visit Brussels.DISCLAIMER: the author of the above written texts does not warrant or assume any legal liability or responsibility for any offence and insult; disrespect, arrogance and related forms of demeaning behaviour; discrimination based on race, gender, age, income class, body mass, living area, political voting-record, football fan-ship and musical preference; insensitivity towards material, emotional or spiritual distress; and attempted emotional or financial black-mailing, skirt-chasing or death-threats perceived by the reader of the said written texts.

If you want to anger a Frenchman, it's very easy: visit France and ask directions to a Frenchman without even saying basic words like "bonjour" or "excusez moi"."I have been reading up on the universe and have come to the conclusion that the universe is a good thing." -- Dissident

If you want a so called "relevant" language, Chinese is the obvious choice. The language of the world's most populous countries, the language of the future world superpower and the language of one of the world's great cultures.
But if you want to broaden your mind, a Classical Language will do you more good.Only feebs vote.

Well, I'd imagine it's pretty hard for an English-speaker. I don't think I've ever heard a native English-speaker having a flawless French pronouciation (I've hear a few Germans with a perfect French accent however)
there was an american girl here who spoke perfect french, but I think her dad was from france and she had lived in quebec for a bit.
I like to think of myself having a very tiny accent, most of the time outweighed by the genevan accent. over the last 8 months, its getting smaller and smaller (as I hang out with more and more genevans [girls])"Everything for the State, nothing against the State, nothing outside the State" - Benito Mussolini

This was a few years ago. The only available direct experience was from taped BBC episodes and such. A lot of French teachers would have never been to Europe.I don't know what I am - Pekka
