  • It would have been funny if he wasn't out of the world cup. It was quite funny that we (the crowd) didn't really know who'd scored so we just had to boo every Belarus player.

Anyway, I was at the Belarus game, I'll copy and paste my thoughts from the game from CG.

    England B 1 - 2 Belarus

I am still wondering how England managed to lose this game.

England started off 4-4-2 with Carrick and Jenas holding and Downing and Lennon really pushing forward on the wings. Crouchy dropped deep to link up from midfield. It wasn't really a great success. Jenas was fairly average most of the time, and only really livened up when he ventured forward. He'd obviously been told to sit as that didn't happen very often.

Crouch and Lennon were excellent. Crouch really impressed me a huge amount, he looked like the most comfortable player on the pitch. Great control, a few effective tricks and most good moves went through him. Had the ball in the net after 10 minutes but it was ruled offside. When Crouch went off England were noticably much worse.

Lennon was also excellent. He beat men so often down the right wing that both left sided players for Belarus were booked, and one got sent off for second yellow. A great option from the bench. His end product was slightly lacking though. Downing was very disappointing. And after I bigged him up to Maroule too.

Towards the end of the first half Jenas ventured forward a couple of times and looked a lot more exciting, eventually scoring from a rebound when Owen hit the bar from a free kick. Owen was very quiet, obviously not quite fit yet. It's good he has another two matchs before the first game.

After half time Belarus scored a bizarre goal that came from England 3rd choice keeper fudging a kick, digging his foot into the ground and sending the ball straight to a Belarus forward who scored into the empty net as Green lay injured. Looks like he'll miss the world cup (sad for him but if you had to choose a player to get injured in a friendly and miss the world cup, 3rd choice keeper isn't the worst option)

Theo Walcott came on for the last half hour to a huge ovation. Looked lively when he could find space, tested the keeper with a volley, but Belarus played very deep and denied him space to run into. They played high up the pitch when Crouch was on to stop him getting knock downs in the area and it'd have been interesting to see them deal with both problems at the same time.

With 10 minutes to go, after many substitutions, England look a bit confused and go to sleep. 10 man Belarus take the lead through an excellent goal from Kornilenko and England never looked like having any idea how to get one back, or much inclination to really try.

Michael Dawson did come on for a quick cameo though and he looked very solid. Also Joe Cole did two absolutely shocking dives to try and win penalties. Really blantant stuff. Must work harder at subtlety in diving.

All in all England lost a match they dominated and didn't make enough real chances with their posession to win it, but there were some definite positives in terms of potential in the squad, notably from Lennon.

      • naters - servette fc this weekend. its the last game of the première ligue season (3rd division, switzerland.) servette is in first place with 65 points, and has clinched since three weeks ago. more points than last years winner, Lausanne-Sports (although they mailed in their last two games)

the playoffs start june 1st, with servette going to play (most likely ) Herisau (thats in appenzell) and then Herisau coming to geneva to play on the 5th. (ive already got tix yea yea.)

if they win (they should, herisau is the worst seeded team and has thee least points out of the three regional divions in 1ère ligue, then they play in the finals on the 8th and 11th of june, again they are the top seeded team so they play at home on the 11th.

if they win, then they are promoted to the challenge league, where they can sign players to contracts and get compensation for when they leave.

plus oliver neuville will come play for them when his career is over (hes ex- servettien) we will however lose Julian Esteban probably, the league leader in points with 22 goals and 12 assists (in 29 games so far) he will probably end up with St. Etienne, in france.

then we can dump the entire slow ass old ass defense and replace them with some ballers.

        • exciting games by the way/ last week was a genevan derby between Etoile Carouge and Servette. I paid 6 francs ($4) entrance, $2 beer, $3 sausage and bread, and i got to see five goals 2 red cards (on the same play) and got to meet the players of the winning team (SFC, 3 - 2)

we play attacking style football. why? cuz our defense has more holes than a sieve (and is entirely composed of 40 yr olds, or 17 yr olds who dont know how to communicate. the old ones are too slow, the young ones make dumb mistakes)

          • servette fc - winterthur, coupe de suisse, quarterfinals, stade de geneve

            1 - 3 (0:0) (0:0)

i was in the S between the top white and the middle white.

it was bloody cold that day, around -8 C or so. but after 2 red cards for servette, three pitch invasions by the fan club "Section Grenat," paper thrown on the field by what was left over after the 'TIFO,' the referee prevented from calling the game and leaving the pitch in the 2nd overtime period after giving his second red card to servette for a questionable call (servette got their first at the end of the 1st half) by players physically restraining him, and the riot police coming out to escort the referee out of the stadium, the stadium was at a boiling point.

8 yellow cards for winterthur, 4 for servette, 1 direct red.

oh, plus the fans shouting 'sheiß winterthur' meaning kinda like '**** winterthur' and the winti players responding with middle fingers and 'bras d'honneurs'

            what a game

15 francs entrance ($10) 5 francs ($3) for vin chaud (heated wine) and a whole lotta entertainment.

            • Well, it seems that Rooney coming back for the group stages is even more doubtful than it was before... what a blow!

                • Rooney being able to play in the group stages was always a long shot. I think that's not unexpected news, he just hasn't recovered faster than expected.

they beat the senior team 2 - 1. apparently, julian esteban (servette) scored a goal that unhooked the net.

Good article. Very realistic. The only nit that I would pick is that soccer is very mainstream, but it has a lot of competition for eyeballs and dollars. Everything from football to bowling. I get the sense that nothing competes so heavily with soccer in other parts of the world (well, maybe baseball does in parts of Latin America and the Pacific Rim and Rugby in some other places). It's one of the reasons why we have our soccer season as spring-summer-early fall. I get the sense that Canada and the US are very similar in this regard.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt.
