Rich was general manager in Tampa from 1993 to 2003. During that time, with our first draft pick, Tampa chose offensive players six times (Dilfer, Dunn, Jacquez Green, Cosey Coleman, Kenyatta Walker, Marquise Walker) and defensive players five times (Eric Curry, Sapp, Regan Upshaw, McFarland, Dewayne White). Only once (in 1995) did Tampa go through the first day of the draft without selecting an offensive player. In fact, from '94 on, except for '95 we drafted an offensive player who would eventually be a valuable contributor on Day 1 of the draft practically every year (notable examples: Dilfer in '94, Alstott in '96, Dunn in '97, King & Gramatica in '99, etc.), a run which only stopped in the latter part of McKay's tenure because of the cap hell he put us in with the big money guys on defense.

Brown repeatedly misses games, and when he does play, he rushes for less than four yards a carry and fumbles frequently.

In his first full year he ran for 4.8 yards per carry. Not his fault the entire team fell apart last year.

He has as many career fumbles as he has touchdowns. I stand by my comment that I'm happy he's in my division.

And in free agency? Either he REALLY sucks picking offensive players, or he tends to ignore that side of the ball. Seeing this offseason for Atlanta, I'd say it was the later, as he signs a DE, a safety, but signs absolutely no offensive players.

And like you said, big money guys on defense. Just because he made a pick on an offensive guy doesn't show his philosophy. For example, Brad Johnson had success for Tampa, but he wasn't exactly a big time QB before, during, or after his tenure in Tampa. The running game had no stars. The only 'star' player they got was Keyshawn, and that was relatively late in the tenure and wasn't known to set the world on fire.

Btw, I LOVE what the Texans did in the 3rd round!

They got OT Charles Spenser, then dealt up to take OT Eric Winston! Those two will REALLY shore up that line.

The Texans picked solid players. It's still very likely that they'll regret passing up on Bush. **** "need", everybody needs Barry Sanders.

Among the best drafts were the New York Jets, who got the best tackle and the best interior lineman in the draft, and then took Kellen Clemens, a good sleeper pick, to help shore up their quarterback position. I don't know much about their last two picks, but 3rd round is a good time to be taking safeties and linebackers in general.

I also really liked the Eagles. Broderick Bunkley is scary, and they managed to steal Winston Justice long after he should have been gone.

Last, I think the Broncos made off really well. They got Javon Walker for a single 2nd rounder, they got themselves a good quarterback for the future, and addressed the TE position.

I liked the Jets draft as well. Really solid. Though Clemens scares me a bit as being Oregon QB.

I didn't, however, like the Broncs pick of Cutler. Plummer is a Pro Bowl QB and he's only 32. Unless they are thinking of dealing Plummer away.

There's reason to be suspicious of Plummer's ability. His numbers seem very fluky. Some years 20+ interceptions, some years only 7. You never know which one you're gonna get, any given season.

Also, because of the Denver offensive line and running back magic, he's in a very nice situation right now. I think they plan on leaving him in for a year or two. He's more than adequate. But it does look like Plummer won't finish his days in Denver anymore.

Used to be, there was a ...29 year old starter. On the sideline was a rookie, and a .... 35 year old vet. Vet pointing out what starter was doing.
2-3 years, it cycled. Rookie starts, former starter to sideline. I like that concept.

Well, to be fair to Plummer, the year he threw 20 INTs in Denver, he threw 27 TDs and over 4000 yards. They may want to rid themselves of him in 2 years, but I feel it is a mistake, myself. He's only gotten better as he finally went to a decent organization and has led the Broncs to 3 straight playoff appearances.
