It would be naive to think a National ID would solve any problems.

The point of the boycott and strike wasn't to hurt or punish business. It was to demonstrate the purchasing and laboring power of immigrants by giving a visible demonstration of what the economy would be like without them. Sure, they will have to make it up. But if every day were without immigrants, it would hurt the economy.
Except for one problem, Che. I, and many others did not suffer any major inconveniences nor did we suffer at all with their absence.

We need some sort of document or ID which is more difficult to counterfit. Currently there are hordes of fake documents floating around and they're sold all over the place. If we had something which was more difficult to counterfit and which employers could check an online database against the document number then it would be extremely difficult to successfully fake. Employers would no longer be able to hire people they know are using fake documents and still have the plausable deniability they currently use; i.e. "I thought his fake document was real".
Everyone would know if documents were real or not and employers could get slapped with huge fines for knowingly breaking the law.

Which is why I have always asked myself the question of just how the "illegals" pay taxes.
Illegals do pay some taxs but the problem is they draw their services from one party and pay taxes to a different party. Illegals pay sales taxes when they buy things, they help pay property taxes when they rent a place to live, and they typically pay car registrations. If they're using a fake social security number they will have income taxes, FICA, and other pay roll taxes deducted but most of them won't file a tax return at the end of the year so the government gets to keep that money; which I doubt amounts to much.
A large percentage of illegals work under the table though so those people do not pay payroll taxes neither do the employers pay for things like disability, worker's comp, or unemployment. On the whole most illegals get paid very little so even if they are using a fake SSI number and not filing a tax return they're likely drawing more in services (education for children, health care, etc...) then they're paying but the same is also true of low wage native born citizens.
Cinco de Mayo. Another day immigrants won't be working.
