That means we need to develop a foolproof national ID system so that employers have no excuses and fraud is easily detected. Once that is in place many illegals will go home because they can't get a job, and their old jobs are being filled with legal guest workers.
That sounds good and I do think we should do that but the fact remains that millions will continue to be day laborers standing on street corners waiting for home owners to hire them for a day to moe the lawn or help pore a patio either that or there'd be the millions of individuals who pay cash to get a nanny for their kids and other such things.

I agree that greater enforcement of the law is needed simply from a law and order perspective but the fact remains that the US needs this cheap labor or else things like agriculture will find themselves outsourced to Asia or Africa. The best way to deal with this is to massively increase the number of legal visas we give to foreigners who want to come to the US while really beefing up the INS and the border patrol and enacting laws which fine corporations such huge fines that they'd never think of breaking the law. As it is meat packers, textile companies, restaurants, and many other industries flaut the law because the cost of a, highly unlikely, fine is like $1000. They can save $1000 on labor in just one week so even if they have to pay the odd fine they're still saving money by hiring illegals.

That needs to stop and the fine for breaking the law needs to be so large that it would bankrupt a company or even a family who is considering hiring an illegal worker. We have to be serious about enforcing the law but Congress also needs to liberalize the immigration laws so that people who do want to come here have a legal way to do so. We just need to make sure the people who come here are not law breakers.

California's state senators on Thursday endorsed Monday's boycott of schools....

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa renewed his call Thursday for parents to keep their children in school during Monday's scheduled immigration rallies, while the state Senate endorsed a boycott of classes, jobs and stores.

Did you read it? The State Senate called for people to protest but made sure the protests were after school.

State Superintendent for Public Instruction Jack O'Connell encouraged students interested in the immigration issue to voice their opinions by participating in protest activities but only after attending their classes.

That's from the first link you stupidly put up there and this is the title of the second article.

Mayor to students: Don't boycott schools Monday
I really have to wonder if you read your own links.

One of the main reasons the boycott was such a dismal failure is that everyone still bought the same amount of goods for the week they just bought them the day before or the day after May Day. Such boycotts re stupid and doomed to fail.

The successful boycotts are ones which last a long time so that the companies involved really do see a drop in sales. This won't amount to much of a drop in sales or much in decreased production because of the way it was organized.

            • Let's see if they can boycott a month. But then, everyone can just stock up in preparation.

Actually we do have those stores in my city, but they don't sell anything useful like walmart.
Yes, that is a cultural trait I don't like either. The "we'll just let the kids run wild because I don't care enough to control them" thing just plain sucks.

In my paper it said 400,000, and official counts are usually low (though organizer counts are usually high).

The point of the boycott and strike wasn't to hurt or punish business. It was to demonstrate the purchasing and laboring power of immigrants by giving a visible demonstration of what the economy would be like without them. Sure, they will have to make it up. But if every day were without immigrants, it would hurt the economy.

As always, we can adapt. Illegals hurt the economy too.

Why would "our" economy take a big hit? We'd simply replace illegal immigrant employees with legal guest workers. Unless the current illegal hiring companies etc. aren't paying legal wages / benefits there should be little or no change. Legal workers will be able to demand and receive better treatment and wages in the long run in comparison to illegals.

                            • My two cents:

So long as we have gross wage differentials between the US and much of the world, particularly Latin America, there will be a strong demand for workers (and their families) to come to America. This is true of both field laborer and skilled professional. The former is seen as a "problem." The latter, often called "the brain drain," a benefit.

Obviously, the way to handle this is to permit the influx of workers while minimizing the social disruption to the extent possible. Very liberal "guest worker" programs seem the ticket.

But to make this "work," I would say that there have to be penalties for cheaters. Stiff civil penalties for employers and denial of social services and any right of citizenship to the 'illegals" seems obvious.

I thus favor a national ID card for all, with privately run databases for all businesses and governments to easily check someone's ID.

People here illegally now should be offered a grace period to sign up and get a card. After the window closes, they have to go home to get one.

One aspect of a new "green" card would be the right to apply for US citizenship after X years of "legal" residency.

To get back in after you leave the country?

I **** you not. Passports, 'or other secure documents' to be required to enter the US from Canada, and that ain't just for furriners trying to visit, it also applies to Yankees trying to get back in.
