  • U.S. Immigrants To Boycott on May 1st

    The story is here.

Basically, activists have called for immigrants to stay home from work and not shop or study on May 1st. This is to protest proposed tightening of U.S. immigration laws. Latino and other Hollywood stars are lining up in support.

My first thought was to wait to see which companies are most affected by the boycott and have them investigated. However, this may be unfair to those employing legal immigrants. Any thoughts out there on the possible impact and results of such a boycott?
"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." -- JFK Inaugural, 1961
"Extremism in the defense of liberty is not a vice." -- Barry Goldwater, 1964 GOP Nomination acceptance speech (not George W. Bush 40 years later...)

    Backlash.

This is not the right tactic to take if you want average people to identify with you.

It depends on how many actually follow the boycott. If a lot of people jump on board it may make a few people realize how important immigrants are to the US economy.

NYE is right. This will make them look even less "like us".

which is ironic, because techniqually, they will be us. My college is organizing a march in support of immigrants on May first, and there is a similar march being planned in the local community.

But really, what are they supposed to do? If they stay completely passive, like every good worker should, no one will worry when Congress passes harsh immigration laws. Yes, some may feel that it is improper to go on strike, but these are the same people who are always opposed to strikes and workers, and are already in the anti-immigrant camp. And if May 1st is big enough, it will prove that A) immigrants are vital to the economy and B) that they are not without supporters.

... so if I look at enough pirated movies, I can bancrupt Tom Cruise, Meg Ryan and the rest?

They are not immigrants, they are illegal aliens. Get it straight.

Is there any way we could convince them to extend the boycott indefinitely?
