Today I did a Windows Update, and after it the litle thing vanished!

So it's put itself on my PC, and is telling me I have an illegal copy. Somehow I doubt Dell are running a massive Windows piracy scheme
It's not there in the "add/ remove programs" list, so how do I get rid of this BS?Comment

I haven't downloaded any updates since I saw this thread. oh well.
wait a minute. I just clicked the download icon in the bottom right. It allows me to uncheck the windows genuine advantage notification. So I'm guessing it won't install on my machine then?

It helpfully gave me the option to not download it, after it had already installed itself on my PC. Way to go, Microsoft! I did solve my problem though, edited the name of a file called wgalogon.dll or something. That showed it, the bastard!Comment

Arrrgh! Now when I go to windows update it tells me before I can do updates I have to update the Windows Update software. The only part of the Windows Update update? The Genuine Advantage Validation Tool!
So, in effect, what they are now telling me is that I can't do any updates until I load the Tool! @&#*^$)!*#$%

a) its too expensive to buy.
b) why bother when you can get it for free with no negative consequences?
c) I own XP home edition, wanted to upgrade to pro for free
d) far too lazy to buy it
e) I don't care about microsoft

The Windows Update software does a genuine check since summer 2005. It has been updated in the middle of May and is now somewhat harder to bypass, previously you only needed to type a line of javascript in the address bar.Originally posted by Vince278

Yes, but its now wanting me to download the (GAT) tool as part of the Update software update and won't let me run Windows Update until I update Update with the update that has the tool as part of the update.
(Yes, I realize I used the word "update" way too many times in one sentence.

If you're getting the message, you're using a widely pirated key or a system where you've modified the activation DLLs.
So the following happened:
1) You're not using the OEM install (does it say Dell Computer when you go to System Properties?)
2) You've given your CD key out to friends/family
