I've found a $1101 (886 EUR) flight from Athens to Baltimore from the Alitalia website. You do have to stop in Milan, Rome, and Atlanta though...

Check with express companies such as DHL or Federal Express. You can get some real cheap airplane tickets if you could live with the restrictions, such as carry-on luggage only.

              DHL?

              FedEx?

              It's more like he'd be carry-on luggage.

                  thanks for the search
Actually no, Olympic Airways costs 1011 euros, and you previously said that what you found (on Delta, right?) was 1160 euros, not 1160 dollars.

The far majority of that $175 goes towards paying for the rooms we're using. The hotel conference rooms cost several thousand dollars for the two days, in addition to the banquet which is also not exactly cheap.

yes but i also said "via farechase i've got a 1200$ from thessaloniki...."
and 1200$ is about 1000 euros
and i prefer lufthansa (the one i found via farechase) from olympic airways

I have found that Sofia-Washington is < 850 EUR. Athens - Washington should be something similar, the distance is similar.
Go to a travelers agency and they will find something for you. In Sofia they did not charge anything and it was better than serching 10 websites.

Where is this conference held? I mean.. the cheapest way to US from Europe is usually via New York. I have never paid over 500 euros for a ticket to the US. And I've gone many times.

Sometimes I'm able to score 300-400 euro tickets. Depends on timing.

Then, take connection flight from there, there are great airliners that are cheap like JetBlue etc.. I can't remember paying more than 200 dollars for JetBlue flight and it takes you to most places. If you want to go cheap, stop looking at direct flights, including in the US end. The key is to get to NY as cheap as possible, and from there on take JetBlue or other cheapoliners to get where you need to go.
