    Is it oil, Alex?
Yes, there are lots of very useful commodities.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

And the ones that are crucial get special attention.

What's so hard for you to understand?

        This isn't maple syrup science.

I want to know the basis for the following statement...

Nothing is as central to our societies as oil is.

Because I bathe in it on a daily basis.

We must preserve the oil so that Albertans can bathe in oil.

Other than that, all I've got is common sense.

What, you think we're going to run semis on coal at some near point in time?

Even the Euros haven't done away with trucks in their distribution system, 1/10th the size of ours none the less.

                Sure we could.

Oil has viable substitutes. There are other commodity industries of similar or greater size. There are other commodity industries that are more pervasive in society. So...

What's the basis for your beliefs about the centrality of oil in modern society? If you're going to be a selective central planning lover, at least I want to know the basis of your belief.

                    But seriously...

Wasn't Suncor built on $30 oil?

At $50 and then $60 and now $70, how could it not be paid off sometime before last Tuesday?

Do you know when the original plants will be paying full royalties?

And do you think that any new plants need the same royalty plans the original plants got?

Do or do not. There is no could.

Every choice among substitutable commodities has its price point. Oil is not immune to this phenomenon.
