Quoting some arbitray numbers is pretty flip and not really an intelligent attempt to debate anything.

          Another quick price quote

Actually it is great for the Alberta economy but I have to think that there comes a point where demand strarts decreasing or are we so addicted to oil that there is really no way to effectively reduce.

I'm just curious, does the price of a barrell of oil yet exceed that of a barrell of Coca-Cola?

            What are you talking about?

Oil is over $70 now, and there is no reason for it other than 'something might happen'. Wait til something does happen.

            Arbitrary numbers? You wish.

I'm not trying to intelligently debate anything.

Honestly, 100$ oil is unsustainable in even the short run. Some sort of massive shock could drive it there for a couple of weeks, but we're already on the high side as it is.

Huh? You are not debating some theoretical guy here-- I work at oil companies so I KNOW the price of oil. I just don't see why 60 or 70 or 80 or 120 should trigger some arbitrary additional tax.

My view is you set a fair regime and live with it in good times and bad-- As it stands, Royalties on GROSS revenues can be substantial in addition to the taxes

I think he was busting your nuts about the "going to $100" part. People in the know are usually very humble about their powers in predicting the direction of the price of oil, so your statement is very flip and doesn't mean anything.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I'm sure the same BS was spouted at $40.

It'll go where the market drives it.

Hey, if it's going to $100, then you ought to make a killing.

                      I doubt you're investing, though.

I live here, and I KNOW the price of oil.

Ready to set that **** aside yet?

Because oil is a sine qua non of modern society, and governments might want to rake off some of the cream in order to stabalise things like transportation so that people can eat affordably?

What about the rest of society outside of the oil industry / producing regions?

                        To hell with them?

                          Already am, buddy.

Next prosperity cheque should be $800 if it hits $100.

This idea that the 'rest of society' is suffering is utter BS. I STILL see people drive around with BRAND NEW big ass SUVs and trucks a few years after the price of oil began to shoot up. It's their own fault. If instead of wanting to buy gas guzzlers, they, I dunno, bought a compact car (but NO, can't have that!), they may not have to spend so much.

Wow... so the price of gas is now $2.75/gal instead of $2.25/gal, which is was 6 months ago (or so). I'll pay $8 more a week while seeing a tiny price increase in food. Big deal. Maybe it will get into some morons' heads that they may want to hold off on buying the H2 that gets 12 miles to the gallon next time.

You think many people driving 4x4's down the Whitemud are worrying about their next heating bill? Of course they aren't.

You want to correct for idiots buring oil on RAMs to tool around town? Make gas $2.50 per litre, in taxes. That'll get their attention.

Incidently, trucks are being traded in at a great rate as things stand.

I'll wager you're not running a business with suppliers out of state.

                                Just a hunch.
