Yep, which is why electricity bills have shot through the roof in Atlanta.. it's mostly from coal fired plants.

People forget . . . Not that many years ago, not many companies wanted to do oilsands as it was uneconomic-- But some companies took a risk and now all the Monday morning quarterbacks with the benefit of perfect hindsight want to appropriate the reward.

They took a risk . .. it paid off spectacularly well. Thats business
I'm hearing more and more of this BS.

They were supposed to break even and then start paying normal royalties. I haven't heard of any acceleration due to the price of oil being double what they originally built based on. ie, if they haven't paid off by now, I have to wonder who they are paying off.

Nobody wants to appropriate the reward. However, projects built at $30 oil are... swimming?.... at $60 and $70 oil.

The rules are changing, for all of us. The argument is that not all of the change should stay in the couch of the oil companies. let some of it shake out to others.

And taxing the economy in a just fashion for all is government.

It's not even only energy commodities. Copper has doubled in the past year too. We'd be in a world of hurt if we tried to run our economy without copper.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

You know what we need? We need a windfall profit tax on those coal producers.

Copper is important, yes, but don't be deliberately obtuse, Dan. Copper ain't oil in the modern scheme of things. The price doesn't have the same effects.

Or on electric companies that are riding shortages to big bucks.

I reserve the right to be deliberately obtuse when you don't even try to detail the basis for your beliefs.

Well, you could start with me arguing for doubling the price of gas through taxation, and then decrying the price of oil, then you might get to where I'm coming from.

Seriously, you aren't coming from anywhere as far as I see. On what do you base your enshrining of oil as a special commodity?

On what do our governments enshrine food as special commodities?

                            OK. For $100

This substance makes transporting goods to dispursed distribution points possible and makes it easier to get to work if you don't live in a mass transit city.

                            Is it oil, Alex?

Incidently, do you have unregulated milk in Quebec?

                                I thought not.
