  • I'm on call.

    I hate that ****.

Any one of our tens of thousands of users can decide that he suddenly needs access to something he's never had access to before, and call the helpdesk guys who will, in turn, interrupt my golf game, sleep, pron surfing, cIV game or even the infrequent - and all the more precious - ******** session.

All that for not much money.

Anybody else has to carry the dreaded pager?

My fiancée does, 2 weeks out of every 12

It's there in case of a radiological emergency. She gets paid ~3$ an hour just to carry it and, should it go off, she would get time-and-a-half for a minimum of four hours. It's gone off one time in 3 years. She got called in because some idiot had left a machine running. It took a half hour to shut it down and check that everything was fine

We're trying to get them to at least provide us with Blackberries but no dice.

Yup, 7 days a week 24 hours a day. Pager, yes, they can always find you. But my job is medical not helpdesk.

Oh, I'm not helpdesk either. I'm the guy they call when they can't solve the problem.

I do one week every 4 weeks right now, on call 24/7. It's supposed to increase to one every three weeks soon.

I don't even know how to use a pager. And before anyone tries to enlighten me, I don't care to know, either.

In Soviet Russia you sing songs praising it.

On the list of things that I hate, perhaps only Ann Coulter and the Ohio State Buckeyes outrank my pager.

I've always found that particular chant rather clever, actually.

I think it actually started at the U. of Wisconsin, though.
