I guess I look at a $20 bottle as a missed opportunity for 2 $10 bottles of similar or higher quality. This view puts a premium on either knowledge of wine value or a tendency to try new wines.
One of the things that I have noticed is that there is a lot of good wine value out there from a relatively broad geography.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
99% of the wine that I had in my life was Bulgarian but I can make a comprison with Hungarian wines and I can safely say that Hungarian wines are inferior. They are too sweet, don't taste like real wine.
Oh and Germans should not be allowed to vote in wine polls.
I see a recent trend to screw tops and to "cute name" wines. Sort of similar to "bicycle" and the like. They are not cheap btw. Tend to be 10-15 range.

If you like Zinfandel then give Castoro Cellars a try. They're located in Paso Robles which is an inland valley in San Luis Obispo County (between Santa Barbara and Monterrey) on California's central coast. It's a real up and coming wine region and many of the wines rival those of the Napa Valley but they still cost a fraction of the price even a mediocre wine from Napa would cost.

Black cherry, cassis and Asian spice nose; luscious flavors of blackberry, licorice, plum, prune, grilled fig, some pepper and vanilla.
Right now, I'm having "Dog House Charlies Chard" with screw top from a convenience store (that stocks a lot of wine). Price: $11. Pretty forgettable wine.
Back in the day (early 90s), I used to drive up to Temucula (effectively N SD Co, but legally part of Riverside or SB I think). Lots of wineries there and little more undiscovered then NOCAL. Got a great red at one of those for 5$. Bought a case. Long gone.
