    Wake me up when 1080p/60 is a standard and included in more than 1% of TV sold. Until then, it's a waste of time talking about it.

      Actually I would be happy with 1080p50 or even 30

      In 5 years they will rule and maybe the next gen consoles then are actually going to be capable of handling such resolutions! In 5 years most people will prolly have either 720 or 1080 LCD tvs and HDTV will actually matter when people are choosing their console.

        1080p30 = 1080i, essentially.

            No.

            1080p30 = 30 fields over 30 frames per second
            1080i = 30 fields over 60 frames per second

              Not that simple.

              Sometimes 1080p30 is recorded as 1080i60. Later the interlacing is pulled out and you have your normal 1080p30. Apparently the two fields can be combined to a fully progressive image.

Look at PSOne sales or more recently PS2-redo sales to see that there are still a lot of people out there who'd rather spend less on a console ... especially younger gamers. If Nintendo is able to grab the younger gamer market, that may set them up for success with a better console in five years when the younger gamers grow up ...

                And I'm confused why people assume Revolution games are going to be cheaper than everyone else. That wasn't the case with the Gamecube, why would it be for Revolution?
                Revolution, with its unique controller, will likely have plenty of novel "cheap" games, non-frontline games that due to the controller etc. are extremely interesting to play nonetheless; $19.99 games that you'd not normally buy. Undoubtedly, the frontline games will still be expensive.

                    People have been saying that for years. No, I think Nintendo has realized that they can't compete with the raw power of XBox and Playstation so they are playing to a different audience (younger gamers) and those who don't want to pay $400 for a system. Plus the novelty factor of the controller.

                    I think the hardcore gamers are out of Nintendo's league and their pie will be divied up by Microsoft and Sony. So I'm with Asher on that. Whether that pie is worth more or less than the different pie Nintendo is going for... I dunno.

                    Even so I wouldn't bet on Nintendo retaking its throne as top console. Though with the problems Playstation seems to be having, and Nintendo's innovative controller and cheap price I think Nintendo may get a very solid second behind the 360.

                        Yep the programmers was so excited about Metroid 3, that their heads explosed.

                        Metroid Prime 3 Details Emerge
                        Will complete a trilogy, stay in first-person and make use of the Revolution controller. More inside.
                        by Matt Casamassina

                        August 3, 2005 - Nintendo showcased a brief glimpse of Metroid Prime 3, the next installment in the popular franchise, during last May's Electronics Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. But the company's quick video of the game revealed next to nothing and it has remained silent on the subject ever since.

                        But some news on the anticipated Revolution-bound sequel is finally starting to hit. Nintendo's official Metroid series site, Luminoth Temple, recently conducted an interview with MP3 developer Retro Studios. Although details on the game were still scarce, some interesting factoids were nevertheless confirmed.

                        Retro acknowledged that Metroid Prime 3 would bring the trilogy to an end. "The plot of Prime 3 is about closure, told against the backdrop of an epic struggle," Retro revealed.

                        Once more, Samus Aran's adventure will take place in first-person mode. "We don't plan on using a third-person camera for the times when Samus is in a suit," the company confirmed.

                        The mysterious material Phazon will again play an integral role in the adventure. Aran will this time battle Metroid enemies and other, completely new threats, according to the studio.

                        The game will be enhanced by way of Nintendo's new controller for Revolution. "We plan on taking advantage of a number of new features in the Revolution, including the controller," the developer said.

                        Although Nintendo has downplayed the raw processing power of Revolution, saying that it has designed the console to be small, quiet and affordable, Retro seems confident that it will be able to take the franchise to new visual heights. "The 'engine' [we developed] underwent drastic improvements between Metroid Prime 1 and 2, and will see even more between 2 and 3," the company stated. "Our engineers are a very talented and dedicated bunch, and they're constantly looking for ways to make our games run smoother with more detail."

                        Music production on the game has yet to begin, but Retro confirmed that famed composer Kenji Yamamoto, responsible for the moody music in the first two games, will be returning for Prime 3. "We hope to take the music into some new directions for this title, and there's no doubt Mr. Yamamoto is going to relish the challenge," it said.

                        And finally, good news for fans of Andrew Jones, the talented Retro Studios artist who created some of the compelling concept art that helped define the game's style and ambience. Though recent rumors suggest he left the company, Retro confirmed that he is, in fact, lending his talents to the new project.

                        Metroid Prime 3 is set for to hit Revolution sometime in 2006. Stay tuned for more as it develops.

                          Huh?

                          1080i is 1080 lines of resolution (1920x1080), the same as 1080p.

                          The difference is it takes 2 fields to paint a single frame (so 60 fields for 30 frames). 1080p30 takes 1 field to paint a single frame, for 30 frames.

                          There is no difference at all between the two -- a simple accumulationbuffer in 1080i can just display every-other-frame and display the exact same picture as 1080p30.

                            The screenshots look cool but I'm most excited about some of the gameplay stuff: Throwing grenades by using a throwing motion with the controller (including rolling them across the ground with an underhand motion) and responding to yes/no questions by nodding or shaking the controller.

                              To be honest, I'm totally skeptical about this "control-the-game-moving-your-hands-like-an-Italian-opera-singer" thing. I just don't think it works as well as with a good controller. But then I'm a PC gamer, what do I know about consoles?

                                I'm also skeptical, I'm wondering what the point is of it. Why do you need to physically move your arms like throwing a grenade? Seems like a lot of work.

                                It seems to me the whole point is supposed to be immersiveness (because it's more "real" to control), but with low-res graphics and no real surround sound that's a problem.
