Lots of criminals in prison have enough time to think over their crimes, and in the end they're a different person. The important thing there is to stimulate that, instead of incarcerating them in places that increase potential criminal behaviour. That's what happens in most countries. On the other hand I've heard about the Finnish approach having more success. But that doesn't work if you merely want to take revenge
