BMW CRITICIZED FOR ADS TARGETING GAYS
    Gaywheels.com Calls Automaker's Campaign Hypocritical
    March 29, 2006
    By Jean Halliday
DETROIT (AdAge.com) -- Here’s a paradox: BMW of North America is under fire from a gay-advocacy auto Web site for advertising in gay and lesbian magazines.

Gaywheels.com called BMW hypocritical, pointing out that the automaker targets “the deep pockets” of gays and lesbians by advertising in publications like The Advocate but doesn’t offer domestic-partner benefits to employees.

“Gay and lesbian consumers want to spend their money with gay-friendly companies,” Joe LaMuraglia, publisher of Gaywheels.com, told Advertising Age. “A lot of people will see companies advertising in gay media and assume they are gay friendly.”

Using domestic-partner benefit programs as a criterion, Gaywheels.com lists some 30 “gay-friendly” and nine “non-gay friendly” auto brands. Seven other auto brands are listed as “still investigating” as the publisher waits to hear about the status of their benefits programs.

A BMW spokeswoman said the automaker, in an effort to stay in line with New Jersey laws, does not offer domestic-partner benefits to any staffers.

    Growth in buying power
The issue is gaining momentum among shoppers in the community. Gay and lesbian buying power is projected to reach $641 billion this year, according to Witeck-Combs Communications, a Washington-based ad agency specialist in the field.

In December the Human Rights Campaign, a gay-rights organization, issued its first-ever “Buyers Guide for Equality,” a handbook that gives brands scores based on the group’s annual Corporate Equality Index. The index rates major corporations on criteria including staff policies, advertising and event sponsorships. Some 200,000 guides were downloaded during the first two weeks it was on the group’s Web site, a spokesman said.

Sixty-nine percent of gays and lesbians said that a Buyers Guide recommendation would very likely or likely influence their shopping decisions, according to a recent survey by Harris Interactive and Witeck-Combs.

DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Co. USA all received perfect 100 ratings in the rights group's most recent index. General Motors Corp., Volkswagen of America and Subaru of America each scored 86. But Nissan North America scored the worst among top automakers with a 29. Not surprisingly, Nissan receives a “non-gay friendly” classification on Gaywheels.com.

    Gay-friendly brands, according to Gaywheels.com
DaimlerChrysler’s Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz and Maybach
Ford MotorCo.’s Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, Aston Martin and majority-controlled Mazda
Toyota Motor Sales USA’s Toyota, Lexus and Scion
General Motors Corp.'s Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Hummer, Pontiac, Saab and Saturn
Volkswagen of America's Audi, VW and Bentley
    Subaru of America
    Isuzu Motors America
    Mitsubishi Motors North America

    Non-gay-friendly brands, according to Gaywheels.com:
American Honda Motor Co.'s Acura and Honda
    BMW's Mini and BMW
Hyundai Motor America and affiliate Kia Motor America
Nissan North America’s Nissan and Infiniti
    American Suzuki Motor Corp.

Brands the group is still waiting to hear from:
    BMW's Rolls-Royce
    Porsche
    Lotus
    Panoz
    Fiat’s Ferrari and Maserati
    Lamborghini
This might be a faster and more effective way to be treated fairly by companies than waiting for the government

I've heard some gays complain about consumer boycotts in the past by christian groups... It's nice to see that others have come to see the power of such actions.

Gay friendly and non-gay-friendly car brands? WTF? Speaking about such things is just drawing attention. It's not like a car can be, in itself, any better or worse for a gay than for a straight person.

And if they put too much attention into the company's affairs when buying a car, it's weird. I would certainly want to buy the best car, and not the car of the company whose policies best match my religious/sexual/political/whatever views.

What a dumb ass statement. Oh noes, NJ law requires that if we give domestic partner benefits to straights we have to give them to gays, so we're not going to give them to anyone!

That sounds better to homosexuals how?

Some see it in a different fashion. You can still buy a good car, and support companies that support your causes. It's not like people are buying bad cars... just selecting between cars they see as equal, and using the companies support of their cause as a tie breaker

Exactly Ming... the whole point is if you have two relatively equal brands, like BMW and Benz, you pick the one that backs your cause. I know people drink Starbucks, over say, Dunkin Donuts coffee because of the "Fair trade" policy Starbucks says it has.

              Yep...
And in this case, BMW should be called out. They have figured out that the Gay market has serious economic power... advertises to them... yet ignores the needs of their gay workers. Pretty stupid if you ask me.

True just like products from Cuba can be any better or worse than other products for an American-- economic pressure is about influencing the product MAKER

Its people's right to buy or not buy for whatever reason they want. While I don't do a thorough investigation before a purchase, if a company had recently insulted something I held near and dear to my heart, they wouldn't see my money for a while no matter how good their product is.

I suspect that a majority of gay people won't get too actively involved in any boycotts based on domestic benefits but its likely enough people could participate such that it gets noticed.

People could boycott stuff for all sorts of reasons. A few that come to mind

                - some sort of anti-walmart boycott call
                - an anti-sealing boycott of some Canadian products
                - The US Cuban boycott ( you should end that one_
                - the anti-apartheid boyotts against South Africa

                etc etc

So if suddently a "non-gay-friendly" company would remain the only producing quality cars, they'd still buy that .

Yep, Starbuck's is a horrible company because they love to claim they're fair trade and for the environment but they're nothing of the sort. Just last week they adjusted their cups to have 10% recycled paper in them because the state of California threatened to sue them because their cups had contained less then 1% recycled paper yet they were still attempting to deceive consumers with advertising claiming they were all super into recycling.

I'll just keep buying coffee from the local mom and pop coffee shop ecause it is cheaper, tastes better, is locally owned, and actually uses fair trade organic beans with 100% recycled paper cups. It's just a better product.
