Whining MacBook Pro? You're not alone

We’ve been hearing the er, noise about whining MacBook Pros for awhile. Now however, the problem seems to be widespread enough to warrant our, and possibly Apple’s, attention. As sister site TUAW points out, the high-pitched hissing/whining/squealing seems to be associated with an idle processor and does not affect all new MacBook Pros. However it affects enough to have sparked feverish discussion in your choice of Apple-related forums. And as these things go, several “fixes” have been suggested including keeping the Photobooth app running in the background to keep the processors busy, installing/uninstalling certain widgets, and disabling the second core processor altogether. Of course, many are simply holding out hope that a future firmware drops to sort it out all lickety-split quick. But that would require Apple to first own-up to an issue, which they have yet to do (publicly) thus far.
    Amazing.

      You're an anorak.

And I put a lot of thought into my lashing out, there is a solid basis for it. I've shared this basis many times.
No, you often just make **** up.

Agathon, on the other hand, is incapable of applying thought. He doesn't think it's a problem if your brand new computer dies a couple days after you bought it due to a software update.
I don't think that was what caused it -- no idea really -- may have beeen a bad power supply (a look on the internet shows me that no one else seems to have had the problem). I think it's a problem, but a lot less of a problem if the company gives you an immediate replacement and goes out of its way to make sure you are satisfued with the free replacement.

I've used Apple computers and peripherals for ten years, and this is the first technical problem I have ever had.

I've been willing to test the waters to see if my opinions still hold true -- I bought an iPod with Video and I do regret it, for instance. I made the mistake of thinking if everyone was raving about how good they were, they would be good.
Because you are the **** who can't even operate an iPod... and you are supposed to be a computer science student. Even the most computer illiterate people I know manage to use their iPods without any trouble at all.

      Except you.

Yes, it sounds like a freak accident. Computers do that sometimes. But you realize, however, that his experience, statistically, has no meaning whatsoever.

Googling "Apple Quality" got me a link to mactouch.com where a number of dedicated Mac users have been detailing a serious of quality problems they have recently experienced. It is not conclusive but it does show that a number of people have been having problems with low quality and poor customer service with Apple.

I'd like to see a scientific comparision of quality rankings as well as customer service rankings between the various big name computer companies. It would be interesting to see how Apple stacks up.

Isn't Consumer report's job to do just that? And why are they doing such a lousy job? Its so hard getting good, rigorous reviews.

Consumer Reports tends to rely upon non-quantitive testimonies from individuals. That creates a systematic bias in the results since they aren't using a good satistical sampling (only those who feel strongly enough about a product to write to consumer reports) and because each individual has a different idea of what is good or average or bad. Real quality control needs hard numbers and Consumer Reports just doesn't have them.

Evidence suggests no such thing. I have never heard of anyone having a similar problem.

                    • okaaaaaaaay agathon. lets look at this logically since that seems to be your forte.

if you, in your limited scope have never heard of a similar problem it must be the fault of the person. there must not be any other possible explination allowed in this system. if not y then must be a. nevermind all the other possibilities that exsist.

i cant believe you, of all people, who constantly pats themselves on the back for being so logical would throw out logic when it suits you.

now lets throw in your overly emotional love of apple and hatred of asher and it seems to me youre the one who is full of bull**** and has no credibility. of course this just confirms what every other, EVERY SINGLE OTHER polytubbie has been saying all along.

btw this was on the first google search did. so asher isnt the ONLY one to have this problem.
