Are any other big name Dems considering a run? I'd hate to think the primaries are already unnecessary.

Don't forget, there's a big issue being raised over on Diebold (?) and electronic voting. I am not on top of it, but there were inquiries on the partiality of the voting machines, esp. after some guy had alleged that a sort of manipulation mechanism was built in there to favour the Republicans.

Something awful smelling may still hit the fan before the election in 2008.

I'm voting Democrat, no matter who it is.
Nothing would make me smile more than seeing the carnage if Democrats win.

It was close in those states with relatively moderate Democrats (Gore and Kerry, as compared to Hillary) - the Democrats were competitive because of the "undecided" voters, not their base.
"Hillary the Rabid Leftwinger" is largely a fiction created by the Dittohead wing of the GOP, and has been largely bought into by people who would never vote Democrat anyway. Her rhetoric and voting record are actually to significantly to the right of Kerry -- which is my chief objection to her -- and she's a better campaigner than he is. I really don't see a problem with her taking every state he did.

"Clinton vows to block bill criminalizing illegal immigrants"

i like how the words "criminalizing" and "illegal" are right next to each other. If you can't criminalize things that are illegal, then what the hell is going on with this country???
Illegal is not the same as criminal, you doofus.

It's illegal to drive 1 mile an hour over the speed limit. It is not criminal to do so.

Maybe, but perception creates reality, and really, "it takes a village to raise a child"? Not exactly mainstream family values.

Electing a woman would be extremely tough anyway, never mind Hillary. Condi would have a better chance, IMO.

Lots of them are. But Hil's emerged already as the heir apparant, kind of like Bush did in the run-up to 2000.

She'd have to do better than that, and the only possibilities are Florida and Ohio, unless you can see something different happening.

On the contrary, those are exactly mainstream family values. They harken back to a vision of American community in which people watch out for each other, where people actually do form a community. The notion that a family alone raises their kids, without any participation from the larger community, is in fact deeply unAmerican, and traditionally associated either with religious or political extremism.

Well, I suppose that depends on how it is interpreted and how far it's taken.

*shrug* My point, though, was that I just fail to see Hillary as an electable candidate. Even if she isn't "too liberal" - and I think the perception, at least, exists that she is, among right wingers and even many moderates - she's a woman. I'm not sexist, but a female President? I can't see that happening.

I said she'd have to take Ohio, but given how close Ohio was, and given that the state's GOP is currently mired in scandal and deeply unpopular, that seems quite do-able.

Alternatively, she could take every state Gore one, plus one other state, and would do the job, too.

And my only point about Ohio is that it wasn't the Democratic base that made it close, but the large number of moderates and "undecideds". My gut feeling is that those two groups would swing Republican if Hillary was the other choice, or they would stay home, and to win, Democrats have to get out the vote.

Well, I guess if Governor Taft was running, Hillary would probably win

Being a Republican in Ohio is toxic at the moment. Mike DeWine, a genuine moderate without serious ties to Taft, Ney, etc., is having a tough re-election battle this year against Sherrod Brown, who is well to the left of Hillary.
