I'm sorry guys, but physics can't explain ****. What meaning do some electrons and quarks have for the functioning of the world as a whole. Man should put his reources int osolving real problems rather than some subatomic stuff. I'm fine with basic research in general, but I think that nowadays too much energy is directed into thsi field.

Interhuman and international relations are where exploration should go. This is where our efforts should be projected, not some semi-philosophical cosmic models which say nothing about the world we live in.

Jon, all those things you mention exist on a purely material basis. Humans are not happier than they were before. We might live longer and eat more distinguished food due to refrigeration and stuff, but what does that have to do with black holes I'm asking you. What does humanity need some 11-odd-dimensional cosmic models for?

Hmm, I agree that science does nothing for happiness or solving social problems. That isn't meant to be solved by physics...

Can material goods be nice? Yes. Can material goods be used by others to solve (or create) problems? Yes.

Leaving the other stuff aside, if you look around yourself and watch all the people whine, they're just not happier than they used to. You might think they are because you think in material dimensions (and have all that working class crap in mind), but if you open a book from former times and compare the author's thoughts with what goes on in people's heads nowadays, you'll come to that exact conclusion: people are not happier.

I would love to go look into condensed matter stuff again. But that isn't the area that I am doing my thesis on, and I don't have the time during my experiment to do anything that isn't related to my experiment or otherwise required.
