Do something a bit more righteous, such as saying it in a creationist debate or with people who doubt modern science? Not degrade people for not being experts and talking about something.

I guess the reason I'm pissed is because I do the same thing, and don't like it when people do it to me.

btw, can anyone solve <2Pz|z|1s> for me?

I am drowning here ( hw at 1am = bad idea)

        Errr...2Pz?

And what's the operator in the middle? Do you mean Sz? Lz? Jz?

Does 2Pz represent 2p-1, 2p0 or 2p1, or some superposition of the above?

2pz is 2p0 if memory serves right. 2py and 2px are superpositions of the other two.

If you're here, let me lay it on you fully:

a hydrogen atom is at 1s at t=0. I have to calculate the chance of it being at 2pz at t=t0, with an electrical field that grows linearly over time, so if I do a first order pertrubation it's

            |a(t)|^2, with:

h=hbar, alpha= some number representing rate at which field grows

            a(t)= 1/ih *<2pz|ez|1s> * integral from 0 to t0 of ( alpha *t exp[iwt] )

            right so far?

ez, btw is a simple multiplication operator, i.e. I multiply by the charge of an electron, and the direction of the field. (goddamn it, I don't remember **** )

You're missing a constant for energy difference between 2p0 and 1s

                roo? :/

edit: that is, isn't the energy difference, simply a difference in eigenvalues of the proper Hamiltonian?

getting the transition element is not so obvious. have done this problem before. need to think.

yes. just pointing out that your w was undefined as yet

                        • they are, without doubt. as to the importance of that to the question, I am not sure, isn't the point of < psi1 | psi2 > is to deal with the psi1 in question, and not other, degenerate wavefunctions?

I have the expressions for the orbitals. I don't need the spherical harmonics. now how about something well thought out. Isn't spectroscopy your direction, GP?
