The 2 profs I've worked with at grad school are both pretty clever (in addition to having about a hundred times more experience in their fields than I do).

a continuation of the Be issue
We lost another window yesterday. Well, they noticed that there was vacuum lost, and found that the window had a pinpoint leak. One thing also noticed is that it seemed to be reacting with chloride, maybe weakening it.
Some of the target people set it up so that liquid nitrogen falls over the face of the window, hopefully that will keep the Be from interacting with the air.
I don't really know much about Be's interactions though....

Well, generally aluminum is used. But this time Be was used (in the hope that it would be better). It seems to not behave as freindly in some respects though. One thing is that Be doesn't really have many things it can fission to, so one would assume the halflife was small. (definitely good in something that our 3.4 GeV beam is going through (although we only have 7-9 uA current))
