The premise--that Rose wants to go back in time to save her father--isn't the problem.

It's the execution. The dialogue is rather poor, the time-travel bit is problematic, and then the custodians of time...

I honestly think it's the weakest of the episodes.

        The ending made me cry....

Yep, the "custodians" thing was ill-concieved (and how do you keep things canonical after that?) but I still liked it, at least it tried to be different.

Well, I just enjoyed the first two episodes!

Rose was campily enjoyable. Sometimes cheaply executed and a bit lacking, but generally entertaining and watchable. The second episode, however was loads better - the one where we witness the end of Earth. A wonderful mix of humor and suspense, with much better production values. The last human was a delightfully hideous creature. Plus, some well-handled dramatic moments at the end.

          I'm hooked.

Oh yes, and I hope that too. That part made me cringe, in a good way.

Spoilers for the first two episodes!

The first episode seemed average, and enjoyable. I found the second episode cringeworthy, with lame humor. The only thing I really liked was the tree woman.

I think the half hour format was much better than the one hour format. And Rose's boyfriend and mum are too stupid to live.

I didn't like the decision to kill off all the time lords.

The special effects, while only decent, are vastly better than what existed in the original series. And that's a good thing. That said, it's nice to hear the old sound effects.

You don't watch Doctor Who for the effects. That said, I wish they wouldn't use CGI so much. It seems like it's the CSO of the new series - bad special effects that are overused.

CGI gets used so much because it's gotten to be so cheap. Dr Who has always gone hand in hand with low budget special effects so I imagine use of CGI in doctor who will only increase from here on out.

I certainly don't think they are using CGI for any consideration other than price and to meet the slightly raised minimum realism expectations of contemporary audiences.

                        Same reason CSO was used.

Honestly, I'd rather see old series special effects (minus CSO) than bad CGI.

There are only so many color inversions and wavy lines across the screen a man can take.

I liked what I saw. The woman playing Rose was an OK actress for TV work, as is the actor playing Dr. Who. Given they are the extent of the permanent cast, that is pretty good.

                              What is CSO?
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.
