Chatting to the manager of our local Waitrose their swipe system seems to reduce theft. The few thefts they have are off set against the need for less staff and tills. Apparently they check people once or twice in the first six months but rarely beyond that.

No idea why 'self service' should reduce theft. Maybe if it appears too good to be true people are suspicious or maybe shoplifters just don;t get Waitrose credit cards.

I like them....I can typically get out of the store a lot faster. Especially the Walmarts in rural areas where most of the populace is too scared to use them.

Because over 1/3 of theft is *internal* theft, and in a grocery store most of that occurs at the cashier level. If you don't have to have a cashier, that means the cashier can't do any of the dozens of scams available to him or her ... and i'm not talking just pocketing cash, that's easy as heck to catch; but there are a lot of very creative ways to steal from one's employers, and an inordinately high number of people try them at one time or another ...

I love self checkout. It's so nice not having to stand in line. It seems I always choose the slowest line, no matter what.

Those self check out things aren't really worth it. Typically there are a bunch of 60 year old pensioners hogging the machine for inordinant amounts of time because they can't figure out how to operate a simple scanner. Sometimes I wish old people would just die; especially when they're in front of me in line and they take forever.

I don't have that problem at my local supermarket. Most people are scared to use it because they are afraid of looking stupid (for good reason ). Nearly every time I can walk right up and not have to wait for anyone. Even Home Depot has them. And I can use my credit card. .

Yep... if I have only a few things, self-checkout is far better than waiting on line.

because there is no cashier of course.

Actually, that's not a big deal. As most of the cashier's in my neighborhood are ugly and/or old. Young women can find much better jobs, no reason to work as a cashier when they can make big bucks stripping or ****ing.
