Shoplifting 101...

Chatting to the manager of our local Waitrose their swipe system seems to reduce theft. The few thefts they have are off set against the need for less staff and tills. Apparently they check people once or twice in the first six months but rarely beyond that.
No idea why 'self service' should reduce theft. Maybe if it appears too good to be true people are suspicious or maybe shoplifters just don;t get Waitrose credit cards.

I like them....I can typically get out of the store a lot faster. Especially the Walmarts in rural areas where most of the populace is too scared to use them."Yay Apoc!!!!!!!" - bipolarbear
"At least there were some thoughts went into Apocalypse." - Urban Ranger
"Apocalype was a great game." - DrSpike
"In Apoc, I had one soldier who lasted through the entire game... was pretty cool. I like apoc for that reason, the soldiers are a bit more 'personal'." - General Ludd

Those self check out things aren't really worth it. Typically there are a bunch of 60 year old pensioners hogging the machine for inordinant amounts of time because they can't figure out how to operate a simple scanner. Sometimes I wish old people would just die; especially when they're in front of me in line and they take forever.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

I don't have that problem at my local supermarket. Most people are scared to use it because they are afraid of looking stupid (for good reason). Nearly every time I can walk right up and not have to wait for anyone. Even Home Depot has them. And I can use my credit card.

because there is no cashier of course.
Actually, that's not a big deal. As most of the cashier's in my neighborhood are ugly and/or old. Young women can find much better jobs, no reason to work as a cashier when they can make big bucks stripping or ****ing.
