  • Shoplifting 101...

Has anyone noticed (I don't know whether this applies anywhere outside of the UK) but some supermarkets, well Sainsbury's anyway, have started these self-service checkouts. Surely these are just an opportunity for dodgy individuals (people like Dauphin ) to just maybe 'mis-swipe' without getting caught. Or is it that my faith in humanity should be restored forthwith.

I don't believe they don't get exploited more than they do, or is the saving of having no-one working on the checkout (as minimal as checkout assistant pay is ) compensating for any loss?

Is the only reason you don't steal, the (%) chance of getting caught?
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

They usually have an attendant monitoring things at the self-checkout aisles.

      Plus, there are cameras.

The self-checkout things also have weight sensors that detect when you put an item in your bag. I know they get fussy even when you do things properly. God knows what would happen if you tried to sneak something past it.

I was with my dad once and some lady was giving us a hard time about some bottles of coke we bought, saying we scanned them wrong. She was saying we only did three, when I scanned all four. That dumbass was looking at the macaroni and cheese I bought (3 of them) instead of the coke. She started accusing us of stuff and then my dad starting getting all hysterical. We called her the "self-checkout nazi".

After she found out she was the one who was wrong, she made up this excuse and said, "Oh, my screen doesn't scroll down all the way... I didn't see it."

GEE, YOU DIDN'T SEE THAT THE ITEM SAYS "MAC AND CHEESE" YOU DUMB****!?!?! And on top of that, what kind of 6 pack of bottled coke costs like 79 cents?

      dumbass...

maybe that's why you are 35 years old and working at Jewel, moron

so yeah, I think it would be stupid to try and steal stuff when they are already overly paranoid about people who do stuff legitimately...

I have seen people put in the wrong item... and so save a buck or so...

but if you think about it, they need less people, so as long as the loss is less than $10 an hour, they probably do OK (maybe even more than $10 an hour, you have to remember taxes and benefits and all that)

Wow 79 cents for three servings of macaroni and cheese that's pretty cheap.
It's candy. Surely there are more important things the NAACP could be boycotting. If the candy were shaped like a burning cross or a black man made of regular chocolate being dragged behind a truck made of white chocolate I could understand the outrage and would share it. - Drosedars

I know the individual packages are under a dollar...

                all 3 together weren't 79 cents...

each one was around 79 cents (IIRC)...

I think the view for SCOT machines are more that they are one step in the natural progression from having paid cashiers, to making customers do their own ****, like we have with self-serve gas stations. Right now they are pretty shaky.

WRT shoplifting, the level of difficulty is dependent solely on the attentiveness and competence of the attendant. Yes, the system knows how much weight to expect, and will put up specific alerts if the weight is a mismatch, and especially if the weight is exactly DOUBLE what it should be, but a lot of times the attendant will simply clear the warning because the majority of the time, it is caused by consumer idiocy and not an attempt to shoplift.
