  • 5% of US Workers are Illegal Aliens

And 500,000 more come every year. So says the Pew Hispanic Center. As many of you know, the Pew Centers do good work, and I believe their numbers to be generally of high quality.

To put this into context, the U.S. population grows about 0.9% a year. Illegal immigration would thus comprise about 0.2 percentage points of that, or about two-thirds of all immigration.

Alternatively, we might surmise that there is 0.2% growth each year that is only counted by the government come census time, every 10 years. In this case, the real population growth would be 1.1%. At the last census, over 5 million people (presumably illegals) were "found" at the census.

Personally, I think having 5% illegal aliens in your workforce is no way to run things. They should be made legal as either citizens (preferable) or guest workers (expedient). In either case, the process for working in the United States should be regularized. The borders should be tightened.

The GOP is hopelessly divided on the issue, as are the American people. Bush is on the practical side while the California GOP and others (and probably a slight majority of Americans) are on the more ideological side. But I think the Dems should throw the GOP a bone to do what is necessary for the good of the country rather than try to score political points or remain silent on the issue.

Illegal immigration in US ‘grows by 500,000 annually’

The number of illegal immigrants in the US has continued to grow by nearly half a million each year in spite of US efforts to increase security at the country’s borders, according to a survey released on Tuesday.

The study, by the Pew Hispanic Center, said that the population of unauthorised migrants reached between 11.5m and 12m last year, accounting for nearly a third of the foreign-born population in the US. That number is up from roughly 8.4m in 2000.

The continued rise was driven primarily by the strong demand for low-skilled work in the US. “What we’re seeing is a labour migration that is tied to employment opportunities,” said Jeffrey Passel, the study’s author.

The findings come as the Senate is set to take up on Wednesday legislation aimed at stemming the flow of illegal immigrants coming to the US. The Senate judiciary committee is launching a three-week effort to produce a bill that the committee’s chairman, Republican Arlen Specter, hopes will create new legal channels for foreign workers in the US.

The proposal, outlined by committee staff on Monday, would allow those illegally in the US to apply for renewable two-year work visas, and would create a new guest worker programme to allow new workers to come to the US legally.

That contrasts with legislation that passed the House of Representatives late last year and would toughen enforcement against illegal aliens but would not allow for new guest workers. Differences between the House bill and the Senate version would have to be resolved later this year.

The Pew survey underscored the substantial presence of illegal workers in the US labour market. It estimated about 4.9 per cent of the US labour force, or 7.2m workers, was composed of unauthorised migrants.

Nearly a third of those work in service occupations, 19 per cent in construction and 15 per cent in production, installation and repair jobs. Illegal workers are especially prevalent in farming, where they make up nearly a quarter of all workers, as well as cleaning, residential home construction and food processing.

Despite beefing up border patrols and constructing fences along the southern US border with Mexico, the US has so far been unable to reverse the flow of illegal migrants there. The study found that the southern border remains the gateway to the US, with Mexican migrants making up 56 per cent of the unauthorised population, and another 22 per cent coming from the rest of Latin America, particularly Central American countries such as Guatemala and El Salvador.

The vast majority of those end up finding work in the US. Among adult males, 94 per cent of illegal immigrants participated in the US labour force, compared with an 83 per cent participation rate for native-born men.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Amazing. The Mexican government actively encourages illegal immigration into the U.S., and it actually prints booklets detailing how to illegally cross.

This is the issue that will ultimately rupture the Republican party. The big business types - and W - are all for it. The traditional conservatives are completely against it.

There is nothing inherently wrong with wanting to come to America and work.

The real problem, as I see it, is that America is unable to handle documenting the amount of people that wish to come into the country.

It's similar to drugs. It's not that the people are really doing something wrong. But it's illegal.

The solution is not to punish them and to deport them all.

It's to reform the system that is "criminalizing" their actions.

There is obviously demand and a real need for this workforce. It's in everyone's interest that these people be here. And it's in America's interest that these people be documented and that they aren't coming here by breaching our security. That way our security resources aren't spread thin trying to stop them from getting here... leaving the federal government to focus on real threats like terrorism.

I say, investigate possibilities like guest worker programs and basically, immigration policies that allow the people who want to come here and work, the opportunity to do so. Because if we let them come here legally... WE CAN TAX THEM
To us, it is the BEAST.

Don't worry, after three more years, people will be leaving America in droves.

Neither party will do anything. Democrats don't want to piss off unions so they won't legalize the flow, Republicans don't want to piss off businesses which are addicted to cheap labor (and many who are addicted to abusing illegal workers) so they won't tighten rules, and both parties are desperate to pander for hispanic votes.

The solution, as far as the politicians are concerned, is to do nothing. Pretend to pass laws to keep the unions and the nationalists (not to mention the racist groups who don't want nonwhites in the country) happy then to deliberately not enforce the law to keep the business owners happy. That's a good deal for the politicians but it is terrible policy since everyone is breaking the law and knows it. Either change the law or enforce the law but don't play these half ass games.

Of course the Mexican government wants to get rid of the unemployed masses. Other wise they just stay at home complaining about the corrupt government which doesn't bother to provide education, social services, or much of anything else. For the Mexican government's perspective it is much better to get those unemployed people out of the country ASAP.

BTW you're right about the break down in the Republican party. The big business types want cheaper labor while the traditional American Nationalist conservatives want to keep the illegals out.

They were actually legal and invited by the Mexican government to settle there. That's the truth. The main problem was the Mexican government at the time was a democracy but a dictator took over the country and a series of revolts spread throughout Mexico after people became upset at the dictatorship. Texas was simply the only part of Mexico which was successful in its rebellion though the natives of the Yucatan killed most of the white people and ran an independent state for around 10 years before the Mexicans retook the territory.

These numbers are unacceptable. When lawbreaking is this widespread, it's time to change the laws.

I don't know anyone who wants to exclude these people -- they're too vital to our economy -- but we have to change the system, so that they can come into the country legally, with minimal exploitation, without having to face the dangers of deadly desert crossings, white slavers, sub-minimum wages and dangerous working condictions. We also need to keep out as many criminals, drug dealers, child molesters, smugglers, etc. as possible.
