I don't see the problem. A scientist is somebody who uses the scientific method to interpret the world.

A bachelor's degree in the sciences is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for this.

Unless you are some kind of wonderchild, I find it very difficult to call a student a scientist.

About the english, well, you are as usual displaying your ignorance - even in danish terms you can be a scientist without a degree, but then you have to be pretty good in the subject - you haven't displayed such.
You have to be a simple troll. You're competing with Agathon and Urban Ranger for the Computer Dunce cap, and putting up a damn good fight in the process.

I will say this about my scientific abilities - I am good enough at what I do that I will never stoop as low as being somebody who develops the apparently-hard-and-complex Danish library systems.

You have a point there that I hadn't considered - even lousy scientists are of course allowed to wear the title
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Typically, at least in my field, students remain students until they finish their degrees then they can be called scientists. Though even then they aren't real scientists until they pass their certification with the state and get their own stamp as a principle.

There is a difference between being professionally certified as a scientist and being a scientist.

I began to consider myself a physicist somewhere halfway through my undergraduate degree. Somewhere about a year into my graduate education I became an active physicist, engaged in truly novel research.

There is a professional certification for physicists (the P.Phys title) but virtually nobody has one (it's only useful for people who deal with organisations that aren't used to dealing with physicists)

Your stupid and ignorant comment about library systems is all the proof I need that you are just yet another PC jockey apparently paid to promote MS

OK, then that is a difference between our two scientific fields. In Geology it is all about which certifications you have, how much experience you have, and where you got your degree.

I would think geologists would need certifications for insurance purposes.

Not officially. Apple would go out of business if this happened, as their previous licensing experiments proved.

On the other hand, it is almost certain that you will be able to install Windows Vista on the new Intel Macs. That means you could have all three OSes in one machine. I imagine some people will jump at the chance.

@oerdin & KH : I think that it is quite easy to define when you are doing scientific work in your specifics, but it's not that easy in comp sci.

Most comp sci students becomes common programmers and certainly doesn't make scientist research - it is very rare that students are involved in regular research unless they go for a Ph.D

                                Oooohhh....

You and UR got owned very nicely the other day in your defense of the security problems in MacOS X. You both ignored the thread after repeated bumps for you to reply.
Not at all. I stated the facts, and then I left the thread. There was no point in continuing the argument after that since it would have involved repetition on my part (and your usual attempt to somehow link the topic to philosophy). Add to that the fact that you have serious mental problems and just prolong debates for the sake of being an ******* rather than to drive intelligent discussion, and it's no surprise that neither of us wanted to respond any further. I have you on ignore as it is, so I'm pretty selective about which particular drivel of yours that I read these days. Please don't be offended if I don't troll the forums to read every single last word you post... I generally can't be bothered.

One doesn't have to be some sort of major league scientist to see through your claims – simply reading around is usually enough to dispense with your opinions.

You've constantly told me I "make things up" by saying things like market share has a direct impact on how much malware a system has. I've replied that it's a known fact by security experts, and I backed that up with many articles and quotes from those people. You ignored that thread, then in other threads continue telling people I make stuff up.
I didn't say you made that up, so this little barb is entirely irrelevant. As it stands, lots of people say what you do, but it's an unproven claim. But you have made **** up in the past or deliberately exaggerated claims from dubious sources. My personal favourites are the time you argued that it was a bad idea to have a big green "X" icon for Excel, because people would confuse it with the "close" button (I'm sure Drake remembers that one). Or the time you used that guy's Apple trashing site as evidence for your claim, when the other articles on the guy's site were insane things like "pedigree dog breeding is racist".

Put simply, Agathon, you are a completely ignorant fanboy when it comes to computers. Everyone should honestly dismiss your opinion and UR's opinion outright, because more often than not it's way off and completely incorrect. I still see you posting "www.apple.com" to people who complain about malware, even after I posted articles from security experts cautioning against that type of thing explicitly.
Put simply, you're a sociopathic nutbar who enjoys himself by trying to grief people over the internet to cover his own personal inadequacies. Your behaviour towards some members of this site other than me has gone off the deep end from the usual teasing and joking into genuine malicious attacks on other posters. You simply don't know when to stop.

And, as various moderators have pointed out again and again, you cry like a stug pig if the same thing comes floating your way... it's pathetic.
