As long as the Yanks/Chinks are paying for it, who cares?

Regarding the Chinese, they aren't on a schedule that would compete with NASA. Besides, the aerospace industry in China isn't very impressive. They buy all their good stuff from overseas. That could change, but it's more likely that a $2 million Texas startup would give NASA serious competition.

The biggest potential governmental competition would be the Russians, or the Russians backed by American private industry.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Russia's manufacturing base is crumbling, though.

They own space launch, however. That could change quickly in favor of the US, if one or more American startup is successful. But neither China nor the EU have a dog in the fight.

yes, the pwn space launch. It's true. However, the vast industrial complex is running on neutral. A small stream of current commercial activity isn't enough to go. You need a bigger volume of projects.

Even neutral is good enough to own space launch nowadays, unfortunately. Space Adventures (US) is offering a $100 million moon fly-by cruise on an upgraded Russian rocket.

They could do it. The capability is purchaseable. They have the know-how. It's true that many of the engineers in the Russian/Ukrainian program are vodka-addled 60 year-olds, but fortunately the technology is not exotic.

For now, yes. However, it's not impossible for the Chinese to catch up and contribute to space exploration development themselves. The one thing that the Chinese have going for them is motivation.

                                From the NASA website

With a minimum of two lunar missions per year, momentum will build quickly toward a permanent outpost. Crews will stay longer and learn to exploit the moon's resources, while landers make one way trips to deliver cargo. Eventually, the new system could rotate crews to and from a lunar outpost every six months.
So they're thinking of replacing the ISS with this, right?
